Mulch is the cheapest thing that makes a property look finished, if you do it right

Looking for mulch & edging in Norfolk, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Mulch and edging is the fastest visible upgrade a property can get, and also the job most often done wrong. Mulch dumped on top of weeds, piled against tree trunks and shrub stems, or spread so deep it suffocates the roots costs money now and creates problems later. Norfolk homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every mulch & edging job in town.

Our crew cuts a clean, deep edge on every bed first and pulls or treats the weeds. Then we spread mulch at the right depth for the material, tapering it away from every stem and trunk. The result is a bed that holds moisture, blocks weeds and frames the plants instead of burying them, with an edge that stays crisp until the next visit.

Why Norfolk, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Mulch & Edging

Norfolk is a small, wooded residential town directly north of our Wrentham yard, so we are in Norfolk almost every week. Most properties here are single-family homes on generous lots: subdivisions built from the 1980s onward, and older homes along Main Street near the town center and the MBTA station. There are also rural parcels out toward the Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and the Charles River side of town.

The ground in Norfolk is a mix of rocky glacial till on the uplands and wet, peaty soil in the lowlands. That wet ground sits near the Stop River, the Charles River and the ponds. Many lots have a high seasonal water table. It shows up as a soggy lawn in April, a heaving walkway in March and water in the basement after a thaw. Nearly every home is on a septic system, so we plan equipment routes and any excavation around the leach field before we start.

Mulch & Edging benefits for Norfolk, MA properties

  • Beds look defined and finished from the street
  • Mulch holds soil moisture and keeps roots cooler in summer
  • Mulch suppresses weeds instead of feeding them
  • Plants stay healthier with mulch kept off the stems
  • Crisp edges make every other part of the yard look sharper

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Norfolk call us about mulch & edging because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Mulch volcanoes piled against trees, rotting the bark
  • Weeds mulched over instead of pulled, so they push through in weeks
  • Bed edges that disappear into the lawn by June
  • Cheap dyed mulch that fades and floats away in the first storm
  • Mulch spread so deep the roots cannot breathe
  • Beds that look good for two weeks and neglected for the rest of the year

What’s included

  • Re-cutting every bed edge with a clean, deep line
  • Weeding and pre-treating the beds before mulch goes down
  • Quality mulch spread at the correct depth
  • Mulch kept away from stems, trunks and siding
  • Clean-up of all lawn and hardscape surfaces afterward
  • Optional mid-season touch-up and re-edge

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope mulch & edging for a Norfolk property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Mulch & Edging works in Norfolk, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a mulch & edging job runs in Norfolk, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Measure the beds

We measure every bed so the mulch quantity is right and the price is exact, not a guess that leaves you short or overcharged.

02

Edge and weed

We cut a clean, deep edge on every bed, pull or treat the weeds, and rake any tired mulch to break the crust.

03

Spread at the right depth

Two to three inches of fresh mulch, tapered away from every stem and trunk so plants stay healthy.

04

Clean up

We blow the lawn, walks and driveway clean, so the only thing left behind is a finished bed.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price mulch & edging in Norfolk, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Total bed square footage and mulch depth needed

Mulch type: natural hemlock, pine, black or brown

How much edging and weeding the beds need first

Access for wheelbarrows or a machine to move material

When to schedule Mulch & Edging in Norfolk, MA

Most mulch goes down between mid-April and early June, once the beds are clean and the soil has warmed. A second, lighter application in early fall keeps beds looking sharp through the holidays. We book spring mulch weeks in advance, so get on the list early.

Signs it’s time to call

  • The mulch has faded to gray and the beds look tired
  • Weeds are winning in the beds
  • Bed edges have blurred into the lawn
  • You are planning a party, a listing or a season of curb appeal

Mulch & Edging questions from Norfolk, MA customers

How much does mulch & edging cost in Norfolk, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for mulch & edging in Norfolk, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Which mulch should I choose?
Natural hemlock and pine bark hold color and break down into good soil. Black and brown mulch give a uniform look. We will tell you honestly what suits your beds and budget.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is right for most beds. Deeper than that smothers roots and invites pests.
Do you remove the old mulch?
Usually no. We rake the old layer to break the crust and top-dress over it. If the old mulch is more than four inches deep, we remove some.

More Mulch & Edging questions, answered

Will mulch stop the weeds?
It suppresses them, especially when we weed the beds first. Nothing stops weeds forever, which is why our maintenance program includes bed care between mulchings.
Can you mulch around a septic system or leach field?
Yes, with light equipment and no heavy loads over the field. We plan the route before we start.
How often do beds need fresh mulch?
Once a year in spring for most properties, with an optional light fall refresh. Well-maintained beds need less each year.

Norfolk history and geography

History

Norfolk is a suburban town on the periphery of metropolitan Boston, located on an upper valley of the Charles River. The land was originally part of Dedham, which was incorporated in 1636. There were a half dozen small farms in the area after 1669, the result of a determined effort to populate the colonial frontier, despite the remoteness of the area. Wrentham separated from Dedham in 1673; what is now Norfolk was in the northern part of Wrentham. The farms were abandoned during King Philip's War in 1675–76, but repopulated later that century.
As further settlement occurred in the late 17th and 18th centuries, agriculture and cattle grazing were joined by lumbering and planting of orchards. Small villages formed around sawmills and gristmills including City Mills (1680), Mann Pond/Highland Lake (after 1691), and Pondville (after 1730). The village center of North Wrentham formed in the late 18th century. After 1812, three cotton manufacturing companies were established at Stony Brook, and later in the 19th century George Campbell's paper mill was opened at Highland Lake making heavy wrapping and building papers. The Norfolk County Railroad opened in 1849, with North Wrentham station near the village center. North Wrentham separated from Wrentham in 1870 and was incorporated as Norfolk.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39 km²), of which 14.8 square miles (38 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²) (2.30%) is water.

Infrastructure

The Town of Norfolk instituted a Department of Public Works in 2004 which consolidated much of its infrastructure and is now responsible for eight divisions. These Divisions are Water, Wastewater, Stormwater, Solid Waste, Highways, Trees, Vehicle Maintenance and Grounds which are all managed by a Director.
The Norfolk Airpark (FAA airport code 32M) had one 2,700-foot (820 m) north–south runway and is about 2 miles (3 km) west of the town center. In recent years, however, the airpark has been closed down and is currently in a state of disrepair. A seven house cul-de-sac known as Tailwind Cir now exists where the hangars used to stand while the remaining airport property is now conservation land known as Leland Wild.
