Plants die from the wrong spot and the wrong hole, not bad luck

Looking for planting in Norfolk, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Planting is where a landscape gets its character, and where people make the most common mistakes. The wrong plant in the wrong spot, a hole dug too deep or too narrow, a root ball left bound, and mulch piled against the trunk all kill plants. They do it slowly, over two or three years, long after the receipt is gone. Norfolk homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every planting job in town.

We start with the site: how much sun each bed gets, how wet the soil stays, how much deer and winter wind it faces. Then we choose plants that will actually thrive there, install them at the correct depth in amended soil with the roots loosened, water them in and mulch them properly. We are not tied to one nursery, so you get the right plant, not the one on sale that week.

Why Norfolk, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Planting

Norfolk is a small, wooded residential town directly north of our Wrentham yard, so we are in Norfolk almost every week. Most properties here are single-family homes on generous lots: subdivisions built from the 1980s onward, and older homes along Main Street near the town center and the MBTA station. There are also rural parcels out toward the Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and the Charles River side of town.

The ground in Norfolk is a mix of rocky glacial till on the uplands and wet, peaty soil in the lowlands. That wet ground sits near the Stop River, the Charles River and the ponds. Many lots have a high seasonal water table. It shows up as a soggy lawn in April, a heaving walkway in March and water in the basement after a thaw. Nearly every home is on a septic system, so we plan equipment routes and any excavation around the leach field before we start.

Planting benefits for Norfolk, MA properties

  • Plants that thrive because they belong where we put them
  • A landscape that looks intentional, not accidental
  • Privacy, shade and seasonal color that improve every year
  • Less replacement, less watering and less frustration
  • Curb appeal that adds value to the property

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Norfolk call us about planting because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Foundation shrubs that outgrew the space and cover the windows
  • Plants dying one by one because the spot is too wet, too dry or too shady
  • Deer eating everything the day after it goes in
  • A privacy screen that never went in, so the neighbors are still right there
  • Bare beds with mulch but no plants
  • Trees planted too deep and slowly declining

What’s included

  • Site assessment for sun, soil, moisture and deer
  • Plant selection and a written planting plan
  • Bed preparation and soil amendment
  • Correct planting depth with roots loosened
  • Watering in and mulching at the right depth
  • Establishment guidance and a plant guarantee

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope planting for a Norfolk property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Planting works in Norfolk, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a planting job runs in Norfolk, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Read the site

We check sun, shade, soil and drainage bed by bed, and ask how much maintenance you want to do.

02

Choose the plants

A plan with plants that suit each spot and the look you want, sized correctly for the space at maturity, not just at the nursery.

03

Prepare and plant

We amend the beds, dig holes wide rather than deep, loosen the roots, and set each plant at the right depth before watering it in.

04

Mulch and establish

We apply mulch at the correct depth away from the stems, and you get a simple watering schedule for the first season.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price planting in Norfolk, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Number, size and type of plants

Bed preparation and soil amendment needed

Removal of existing plants or lawn

Delivery and access for larger trees

When to schedule Planting in Norfolk, MA

Spring and fall are the best planting seasons in Massachusetts: cool air, warm soil and reliable rain. Container plants can go in through summer with attentive watering. Evergreens and screens do best planted by early fall so roots establish before winter.

Signs it’s time to call

  • Overgrown or dying foundation plantings
  • You want privacy from the road or a neighbor
  • Beds are bare or planted with things that never did well
  • A new patio or walkway needs plantings to finish it

Norfolk history and geography

History

Norfolk is a suburban town on the periphery of metropolitan Boston, located on an upper valley of the Charles River. The land was originally part of Dedham, which was incorporated in 1636. There were a half dozen small farms in the area after 1669, the result of a determined effort to populate the colonial frontier, despite the remoteness of the area. Wrentham separated from Dedham in 1673; what is now Norfolk was in the northern part of Wrentham. The farms were abandoned during King Philip's War in 1675–76, but repopulated later that century.
As further settlement occurred in the late 17th and 18th centuries, agriculture and cattle grazing were joined by lumbering and planting of orchards. Small villages formed around sawmills and gristmills including City Mills (1680), Mann Pond/Highland Lake (after 1691), and Pondville (after 1730). The village center of North Wrentham formed in the late 18th century. After 1812, three cotton manufacturing companies were established at Stony Brook, and later in the 19th century George Campbell's paper mill was opened at Highland Lake making heavy wrapping and building papers. The Norfolk County Railroad opened in 1849, with North Wrentham station near the village center. North Wrentham separated from Wrentham in 1870 and was incorporated as Norfolk.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39 km²), of which 14.8 square miles (38 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²) (2.30%) is water.

Infrastructure

The Town of Norfolk instituted a Department of Public Works in 2004 which consolidated much of its infrastructure and is now responsible for eight divisions. These Divisions are Water, Wastewater, Stormwater, Solid Waste, Highways, Trees, Vehicle Maintenance and Grounds which are all managed by a Director.
The Norfolk Airpark (FAA airport code 32M) had one 2,700-foot (820 m) north–south runway and is about 2 miles (3 km) west of the town center. In recent years, however, the airpark has been closed down and is currently in a state of disrepair. A seven house cul-de-sac known as Tailwind Cir now exists where the hangars used to stand while the remaining airport property is now conservation land known as Leland Wild.
