Most shrub problems are pruning problems in disguise

Looking for tree & shrub care in Norfolk, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Tree and shrub care is where the difference between a landscaper and a lawn crew shows up. Shearing every shrub into a ball in July or cutting spring bloomers in fall does real damage. So does ignoring the scale, winter moth and fungus that quietly kill ornamentals. That is how a mature landscape falls apart one season at a time. Norfolk homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every tree & shrub care job in town.

Our program covers structural and maintenance pruning at the right time for each species, plus deep-root feeding for trees and shrubs that are struggling. It also includes monitoring and treatment for the insects and diseases common to this part of Massachusetts. We work on the plants you already have, whether that is a fifty-year-old rhododendron border or the foundation plantings that came with the house.

Why Norfolk, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Tree & Shrub Care

Norfolk is a small, wooded residential town directly north of our Wrentham yard, so we are in Norfolk almost every week. Most properties here are single-family homes on generous lots: subdivisions built from the 1980s onward, and older homes along Main Street near the town center and the MBTA station. There are also rural parcels out toward the Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and the Charles River side of town.

The ground in Norfolk is a mix of rocky glacial till on the uplands and wet, peaty soil in the lowlands. That wet ground sits near the Stop River, the Charles River and the ponds. Many lots have a high seasonal water table. It shows up as a soggy lawn in April, a heaving walkway in March and water in the basement after a thaw. Nearly every home is on a septic system, so we plan equipment routes and any excavation around the leach field before we start.

Tree & Shrub Care benefits for Norfolk, MA properties

  • Shrubs bloom the way they should
  • Hedges stay full from the ground up
  • Early treatment saves plants you would otherwise lose
  • Protection for mature plantings that would cost thousands to replace
  • The whole landscape looks tended, not just trimmed

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Norfolk call us about tree & shrub care because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Hydrangeas and lilacs that never bloom because someone pruned them at the wrong time
  • Hedges thinning out at the bottom from years of shearing
  • Arborvitae browning from winter burn, bagworms or deer
  • Rhododendrons and hollies yellowing in poor soil
  • Winter moth, scale and lace bug stripping ornamentals every spring
  • Foundation shrubs that have swallowed the windows

What’s included

  • Pruning on a species-specific schedule
  • Rejuvenation pruning for overgrown shrubs
  • Deep-root fertilization for trees and shrubs
  • Insect and disease monitoring and treatment
  • Winter protection and anti-desiccant sprays where needed
  • Removal and replacement recommendations when a plant is beyond saving

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope tree & shrub care for a Norfolk property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Tree & Shrub Care works in Norfolk, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a tree & shrub care job runs in Norfolk, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Inventory the plants

We walk the property and identify every ornamental tree and shrub, its condition and what it needs, and give you a written plan.

02

Prune on schedule

Spring bloomers after they flower, summer bloomers in late winter, hedges and evergreens in their window. No shearing everything into balls in July.

03

Feed and protect

Deep-root feeding where soil is poor, treatments timed to the pest lifecycle, and winter protection for plants that need it.

04

Monitor all season

Because our crews are on the property regularly, we spot problems early, when a small treatment fixes them.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price tree & shrub care in Norfolk, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Number and size of the trees and shrubs on the property

How overgrown or neglected the plants are when we start

Which treatments the plants need and how many visits

Whether you bundle care with a maintenance program

When to schedule Tree & Shrub Care in Norfolk, MA

Pruning runs nearly year-round, but the window depends on the plant. It is late winter for most trees and summer bloomers, right after flowering for spring bloomers, and early summer for hedges. Feeding is spring and fall. Pest treatments follow the pest, not the calendar, so the earlier we see the property the better.

Signs it’s time to call

  • Shrubs that used to bloom and no longer do
  • Hedges that are dense on top and bare at the bottom
  • Browning, yellowing or thinning on evergreens
  • Foundation plantings covering windows and siding

The job might be near Highland Lake, around Norfolk Center or out on the roads toward Millis and Medfield. Either way, we treat Norfolk like our own town, because for several of our crew it is.

Tree & Shrub Care questions from Norfolk, MA customers

How much does tree & shrub care cost in Norfolk, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for tree & shrub care in Norfolk, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
When should I prune my hydrangeas?
It depends on the type. Bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood and get a light clean-up after flowering. Panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so we cut them back in late winter. Pruning the wrong one at the wrong time is why so many never bloom.
Can you save an overgrown shrub?
Usually. Rejuvenation pruning over two or three seasons brings most overgrown shrubs back. We will tell you if replacement makes more sense.
Do you treat for winter moth and other pests?
Yes. We monitor for winter moth, scale, lace bug, mites and the other common pests and treat on the right timing.

More Tree & Shrub Care questions, answered

Why are my arborvitae turning brown?
Common causes are winter burn, deer browse, bagworms or root problems from wet soil. We diagnose the actual cause before treating.
Do you remove large trees?
We handle ornamental and small tree work. For large removals and climbing work, we refer you to a licensed arborist we trust.
Is deep-root feeding worth it?
For trees and shrubs in poor or compacted soil, yes. It delivers nutrients where roots can use them and is one of the best ways to bring a struggling plant back.

Norfolk history and geography

History

Norfolk is a suburban town on the periphery of metropolitan Boston, located on an upper valley of the Charles River. The land was originally part of Dedham, which was incorporated in 1636. There were a half dozen small farms in the area after 1669, the result of a determined effort to populate the colonial frontier, despite the remoteness of the area. Wrentham separated from Dedham in 1673; what is now Norfolk was in the northern part of Wrentham. The farms were abandoned during King Philip's War in 1675–76, but repopulated later that century.
As further settlement occurred in the late 17th and 18th centuries, agriculture and cattle grazing were joined by lumbering and planting of orchards. Small villages formed around sawmills and gristmills including City Mills (1680), Mann Pond/Highland Lake (after 1691), and Pondville (after 1730). The village center of North Wrentham formed in the late 18th century. After 1812, three cotton manufacturing companies were established at Stony Brook, and later in the 19th century George Campbell's paper mill was opened at Highland Lake making heavy wrapping and building papers. The Norfolk County Railroad opened in 1849, with North Wrentham station near the village center. North Wrentham separated from Wrentham in 1870 and was incorporated as Norfolk.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39 km²), of which 14.8 square miles (38 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²) (2.30%) is water.

Infrastructure

The Town of Norfolk instituted a Department of Public Works in 2004 which consolidated much of its infrastructure and is now responsible for eight divisions. These Divisions are Water, Wastewater, Stormwater, Solid Waste, Highways, Trees, Vehicle Maintenance and Grounds which are all managed by a Director.
The Norfolk Airpark (FAA airport code 32M) had one 2,700-foot (820 m) north–south runway and is about 2 miles (3 km) west of the town center. In recent years, however, the airpark has been closed down and is currently in a state of disrepair. A seven house cul-de-sac known as Tailwind Cir now exists where the hangars used to stand while the remaining airport property is now conservation land known as Leland Wild.
