A wall fails from behind, not from the front

Looking for retaining walls in Wrentham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also right here in town.

Retaining walls are structures, and they fail like structures: slowly, then all at once. Water building up behind a wall with no drainage is what pushes the face out, tips the top forward and eventually drops the wall into the yard. Most of the failed walls we replace had no base, no drainage, or neither. Wrentham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every retaining walls job in town.

Every wall we build starts with an excavated, compacted base below the first course. It also includes a drainage stone backfill and a perforated drain pipe behind the wall, and leans back at the correct batter into the slope. For taller walls we use geogrid reinforcement and, where required, an engineer. The face of the wall is your choice: segmental block, natural fieldstone, granite or boulders.

Why Wrentham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Retaining Walls

Wrentham is home base for Ten Four. Our yard sits on West Street, so a job anywhere in town is close-to-home work for us. That includes the historic common where Route 1A meets Route 140 as well as the Sheldonville neighborhoods on the west side. We know the properties here: large wooded lots with granite ledge just under the topsoil, and older village homes with mature trees and tired plantings. Then there are the newer subdivisions, where builder-grade grading and a thin layer of loam turn into drainage and lawn problems within a few seasons.

Much of Wrentham sits on glacial till over ledge, which means shallow bedrock in places, stones in every shovelful and soil that drains unevenly. Low ground around Lake Pearl and Lake Archer stays wet well into spring, while the higher, rockier lots dry out fast in July. That combination is exactly why base preparation, drainage and soil correction matter so much here. It is also why we look at the ground before we put a number on paper.

Retaining Walls benefits for Wrentham, MA properties

  • Slopes become usable patios, lawns and planting beds
  • Erosion stops and soil stays where it belongs
  • A properly drained wall stands for decades
  • Natural stone or block that improves the look of the property
  • Peace of mind that the wall is not going anywhere

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Wrentham call us about retaining walls because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A wall that is leaning, bulging or has already fallen
  • Water pushing through or over the wall after every storm
  • A steep, unusable slope that erodes into the lawn
  • Landscape timbers rotting and collapsing
  • A wall built without a base that heaves every winter
  • Not knowing if the wall needs an engineer or a permit

What’s included

  • Excavated and compacted base below the first course
  • Drainage stone backfill and perforated drain pipe
  • Correct batter and interlocking or pinned courses
  • Geogrid reinforcement on taller walls
  • Capstones or a finished top course
  • Finish grading and restoration of the surrounding lawn or beds

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope retaining walls for a Wrentham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Retaining Walls works in Wrentham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a retaining walls job runs in Wrentham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Assess the slope

We look at the height, the soil, where the water goes and what the wall has to hold. Then we tell you what type of wall makes sense and whether it needs an engineer.

02

Build the base

The wall is only as good as what is under it. We excavate below grade and compact a stone base before the first course goes down.

03

Stack with drainage

We set each course level with the correct batter, and place drainage stone and pipe behind the wall as it rises so water never builds up.

04

Cap and restore

Capstones finish the top, then we grade the backfill and restore the surrounding lawn or beds.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price retaining walls in Wrentham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Wall height and length

Material: segmental block, natural stone, granite or boulders

Excavation, drainage and geogrid the wall requires

Access for equipment and material delivery

When to schedule Retaining Walls in Wrentham, MA

We build walls from the spring thaw through early winter. Because wall projects often tie into patios, steps and grading, planning them in the off-season means we can sequence the whole project properly in spring. If a wall is actively failing, call now; a wall that has started to move rarely stops on its own.

Signs it’s time to call

  • An existing wall is leaning, cracking or bulging
  • A slope is eroding or impossible to mow
  • You want a flat, usable area where there is currently a hill
  • Timber walls are rotting and need replacement

Retaining Walls questions from Wrentham, MA customers

How much do retaining walls cost in Wrentham, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for retaining walls in Wrentham, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Does my wall need a permit or an engineer?
Walls above about four feet, or walls holding a surcharge such as a driveway, often require engineering and a permit. We check the local requirements and handle it.
Block or natural stone?
Segmental block gives you a uniform, cost-effective wall engineered for the job. Natural stone and boulder walls have a timeless look and cost more in labor. Both get the same base and drainage.
Why did my old wall fail?
Almost always water and no drainage, a missing base, or no batter. Sometimes all three.

A wall that has started to lean usually needs to be rebuilt. We will tell you honestly if a repair is worth it.
How high can you build a wall?
As high as the site requires with proper engineering, but terracing two shorter walls is often a better-looking and more affordable solution.

Wrentham history and geography

History

In 1660, five men from Dedham were sent to explore the lakes near George Indian's wigwam and to report back to the selectmen what they found. The report of those men, Daniel Fisher, Anthony Fisher, Sgt. Fuller, Richard Ellis, and Richard Wheeler, was received with such enthusiasm that in March 1661 it was voted to start a new settlement there. The Town then voted to send Ellis and Timothy Dwight to go negotiate with King Philip to purchase the title to the area known as Wollomonopoag.
They purchased 600 acres of land for £24, 6s. The money was paid out of pocket by Captain Willett, who accompanied Ellis and Dwight. The Town voted to assess a tax upon the cow commons to repay him, but some thought the money should be paid by those who would be moving to the new village. The dispute resulted in Willet not being paid back for several years.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.9 square miles (59 km²), of which 22.2 square miles (57 km²) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) (3.14%) is water. Wrentham is bordered by Norfolk on the north, Foxboro on the east, Plainville and Cumberland, Rhode Island on the south, Bellingham on the southwest, and Franklin on the west. It has two large lakes towards the center of town, Lake Pearl and Lake Archer, as well as Mirror Lake on the Wrentham/Norfolk border and numerous smaller lakes.
Sheldonville, or West Wrentham, is a rural section of Wrentham located on the western leg of town. Sheldonville still maintains a unique identity as the old farming section of Wrentham, has active commercial orchards, and has its own ZIP Code (02070). Wrentham drains into four watersheds. They are the Charles River to the north, the Taunton River to the east, the Blackstone River to the west, and the Ten Mile River to the south.
Wrentham is the only town of that name in the United States. It is named after the village of Wrentham, Suffolk, England. The only other Wrentham is Wrentham, Alberta. Wrentham, Massachusetts, is by far the most populous of the three.
