Plants die from the wrong spot and the wrong hole, not bad luck

Looking for planting in Wrentham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also right here in town.

Planting is where a landscape gets its character, and where people make the most common mistakes. The wrong plant in the wrong spot, a hole dug too deep or too narrow, a root ball left bound, and mulch piled against the trunk all kill plants. They do it slowly, over two or three years, long after the receipt is gone. Wrentham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every planting job in town.

We start with the site: how much sun each bed gets, how wet the soil stays, how much deer and winter wind it faces. Then we choose plants that will actually thrive there, install them at the correct depth in amended soil with the roots loosened, water them in and mulch them properly. We are not tied to one nursery, so you get the right plant, not the one on sale that week.

Why Wrentham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Planting

Wrentham is home base for Ten Four. Our yard sits on West Street, so a job anywhere in town is close-to-home work for us. That includes the historic common where Route 1A meets Route 140 as well as the Sheldonville neighborhoods on the west side. We know the properties here: large wooded lots with granite ledge just under the topsoil, and older village homes with mature trees and tired plantings. Then there are the newer subdivisions, where builder-grade grading and a thin layer of loam turn into drainage and lawn problems within a few seasons.

Much of Wrentham sits on glacial till over ledge, which means shallow bedrock in places, stones in every shovelful and soil that drains unevenly. Low ground around Lake Pearl and Lake Archer stays wet well into spring, while the higher, rockier lots dry out fast in July. That combination is exactly why base preparation, drainage and soil correction matter so much here. It is also why we look at the ground before we put a number on paper.

Planting benefits for Wrentham, MA properties

  • Plants that thrive because they belong where we put them
  • A landscape that looks intentional, not accidental
  • Privacy, shade and seasonal color that improve every year
  • Less replacement, less watering and less frustration
  • Curb appeal that adds value to the property

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Wrentham call us about planting because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Foundation shrubs that outgrew the space and cover the windows
  • Plants dying one by one because the spot is too wet, too dry or too shady
  • Deer eating everything the day after it goes in
  • A privacy screen that never went in, so the neighbors are still right there
  • Bare beds with mulch but no plants
  • Trees planted too deep and slowly declining

What’s included

  • Site assessment for sun, soil, moisture and deer
  • Plant selection and a written planting plan
  • Bed preparation and soil amendment
  • Correct planting depth with roots loosened
  • Watering in and mulching at the right depth
  • Establishment guidance and a plant guarantee

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope planting for a Wrentham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Planting works in Wrentham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a planting job runs in Wrentham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Read the site

We check sun, shade, soil and drainage bed by bed, and ask how much maintenance you want to do.

02

Choose the plants

A plan with plants that suit each spot and the look you want, sized correctly for the space at maturity, not just at the nursery.

03

Prepare and plant

We amend the beds, dig holes wide rather than deep, loosen the roots, and set each plant at the right depth before watering it in.

04

Mulch and establish

We apply mulch at the correct depth away from the stems, and you get a simple watering schedule for the first season.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price planting in Wrentham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Number, size and type of plants

Bed preparation and soil amendment needed

Removal of existing plants or lawn

Delivery and access for larger trees

When to schedule Planting in Wrentham, MA

Spring and fall are the best planting seasons in Massachusetts: cool air, warm soil and reliable rain. Container plants can go in through summer with attentive watering. Evergreens and screens do best planted by early fall so roots establish before winter.

Signs it’s time to call

  • Overgrown or dying foundation plantings
  • You want privacy from the road or a neighbor
  • Beds are bare or planted with things that never did well
  • A new patio or walkway needs plantings to finish it

Wrentham history and geography

History

In 1660, five men from Dedham were sent to explore the lakes near George Indian's wigwam and to report back to the selectmen what they found. The report of those men, Daniel Fisher, Anthony Fisher, Sgt. Fuller, Richard Ellis, and Richard Wheeler, was received with such enthusiasm that in March 1661 it was voted to start a new settlement there. The Town then voted to send Ellis and Timothy Dwight to go negotiate with King Philip to purchase the title to the area known as Wollomonopoag.
They purchased 600 acres of land for £24, 6s. The money was paid out of pocket by Captain Willett, who accompanied Ellis and Dwight. The Town voted to assess a tax upon the cow commons to repay him, but some thought the money should be paid by those who would be moving to the new village. The dispute resulted in Willet not being paid back for several years.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.9 square miles (59 km²), of which 22.2 square miles (57 km²) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) (3.14%) is water. Wrentham is bordered by Norfolk on the north, Foxboro on the east, Plainville and Cumberland, Rhode Island on the south, Bellingham on the southwest, and Franklin on the west. It has two large lakes towards the center of town, Lake Pearl and Lake Archer, as well as Mirror Lake on the Wrentham/Norfolk border and numerous smaller lakes.
Sheldonville, or West Wrentham, is a rural section of Wrentham located on the western leg of town. Sheldonville still maintains a unique identity as the old farming section of Wrentham, has active commercial orchards, and has its own ZIP Code (02070). Wrentham drains into four watersheds. They are the Charles River to the north, the Taunton River to the east, the Blackstone River to the west, and the Ten Mile River to the south.
Wrentham is the only town of that name in the United States. It is named after the village of Wrentham, Suffolk, England. The only other Wrentham is Wrentham, Alberta. Wrentham, Massachusetts, is by far the most populous of the three.
