A wall fails from behind, not from the front

Looking for retaining walls in Norfolk, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Retaining walls are structures, and they fail like structures: slowly, then all at once. Water building up behind a wall with no drainage is what pushes the face out, tips the top forward and eventually drops the wall into the yard. Most of the failed walls we replace had no base, no drainage, or neither. Norfolk homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every retaining walls job in town.

Every wall we build starts with an excavated, compacted base below the first course. It also includes a drainage stone backfill and a perforated drain pipe behind the wall, and leans back at the correct batter into the slope. For taller walls we use geogrid reinforcement and, where required, an engineer. The face of the wall is your choice: segmental block, natural fieldstone, granite or boulders.

Why Norfolk, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Retaining Walls

Norfolk is a small, wooded residential town directly north of our Wrentham yard, so we are in Norfolk almost every week. Most properties here are single-family homes on generous lots: subdivisions built from the 1980s onward, and older homes along Main Street near the town center and the MBTA station. There are also rural parcels out toward the Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and the Charles River side of town.

The ground in Norfolk is a mix of rocky glacial till on the uplands and wet, peaty soil in the lowlands. That wet ground sits near the Stop River, the Charles River and the ponds. Many lots have a high seasonal water table. It shows up as a soggy lawn in April, a heaving walkway in March and water in the basement after a thaw. Nearly every home is on a septic system, so we plan equipment routes and any excavation around the leach field before we start.

Retaining Walls benefits for Norfolk, MA properties

  • Slopes become usable patios, lawns and planting beds
  • Erosion stops and soil stays where it belongs
  • A properly drained wall stands for decades
  • Natural stone or block that improves the look of the property
  • Peace of mind that the wall is not going anywhere

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Norfolk call us about retaining walls because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A wall that is leaning, bulging or has already fallen
  • Water pushing through or over the wall after every storm
  • A steep, unusable slope that erodes into the lawn
  • Landscape timbers rotting and collapsing
  • A wall built without a base that heaves every winter
  • Not knowing if the wall needs an engineer or a permit

What’s included

  • Excavated and compacted base below the first course
  • Drainage stone backfill and perforated drain pipe
  • Correct batter and interlocking or pinned courses
  • Geogrid reinforcement on taller walls
  • Capstones or a finished top course
  • Finish grading and restoration of the surrounding lawn or beds

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope retaining walls for a Norfolk property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Retaining Walls works in Norfolk, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a retaining walls job runs in Norfolk, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Assess the slope

We look at the height, the soil, where the water goes and what the wall has to hold. Then we tell you what type of wall makes sense and whether it needs an engineer.

02

Build the base

The wall is only as good as what is under it. We excavate below grade and compact a stone base before the first course goes down.

03

Stack with drainage

We set each course level with the correct batter, and place drainage stone and pipe behind the wall as it rises so water never builds up.

04

Cap and restore

Capstones finish the top, then we grade the backfill and restore the surrounding lawn or beds.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price retaining walls in Norfolk, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Wall height and length

Material: segmental block, natural stone, granite or boulders

Excavation, drainage and geogrid the wall requires

Access for equipment and material delivery

When to schedule Retaining Walls in Norfolk, MA

We build walls from the spring thaw through early winter. Because wall projects often tie into patios, steps and grading, planning them in the off-season means we can sequence the whole project properly in spring. If a wall is actively failing, call now; a wall that has started to move rarely stops on its own.

Signs it’s time to call

  • An existing wall is leaning, cracking or bulging
  • A slope is eroding or impossible to mow
  • You want a flat, usable area where there is currently a hill
  • Timber walls are rotting and need replacement

Why choose Ten Four for Retaining Walls in Norfolk, MA

Certainly, plenty of people will quote you retaining walls in Norfolk. But here is what you get with Ten Four Landscape & Construction that you do not get everywhere else:

  • Drainage behind every wall — drainage stone and pipe are standard, not extras.
  • Built to hold, not just to look good — compacted base, correct batter, geogrid when needed.

Retaining Walls questions from Norfolk, MA customers

How much do retaining walls cost in Norfolk, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for retaining walls in Norfolk, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Does my wall need a permit or an engineer?
Walls above about four feet, or walls holding a surcharge such as a driveway, often require engineering and a permit. We check the local requirements and handle it.
Block or natural stone?
Segmental block gives you a uniform, cost-effective wall engineered for the job. Natural stone and boulder walls have a timeless look and cost more in labor. Both get the same base and drainage.
Why did my old wall fail?
Almost always water and no drainage, a missing base, or no batter. Sometimes all three.

Can you repair a leaning wall?
A wall that has started to lean usually needs to be rebuilt. We will tell you honestly if a repair is worth it.
How high can you build a wall?
As high as the site requires with proper engineering, but terracing two shorter walls is often a better-looking and more affordable solution.
Will the wall drain properly?
Yes. Every wall gets drainage stone backfill and a perforated pipe to daylight, so water never builds up behind it.

Norfolk history and geography

History

Norfolk is a suburban town on the periphery of metropolitan Boston, located on an upper valley of the Charles River. The land was originally part of Dedham, which was incorporated in 1636. There were a half dozen small farms in the area after 1669, the result of a determined effort to populate the colonial frontier, despite the remoteness of the area. Wrentham separated from Dedham in 1673; what is now Norfolk was in the northern part of Wrentham. The farms were abandoned during King Philip's War in 1675–76, but repopulated later that century.
As further settlement occurred in the late 17th and 18th centuries, agriculture and cattle grazing were joined by lumbering and planting of orchards. Small villages formed around sawmills and gristmills including City Mills (1680), Mann Pond/Highland Lake (after 1691), and Pondville (after 1730). The village center of North Wrentham formed in the late 18th century. After 1812, three cotton manufacturing companies were established at Stony Brook, and later in the 19th century George Campbell's paper mill was opened at Highland Lake making heavy wrapping and building papers. The Norfolk County Railroad opened in 1849, with North Wrentham station near the village center. North Wrentham separated from Wrentham in 1870 and was incorporated as Norfolk.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39 km²), of which 14.8 square miles (38 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²) (2.30%) is water.

Infrastructure

The Town of Norfolk instituted a Department of Public Works in 2004 which consolidated much of its infrastructure and is now responsible for eight divisions. These Divisions are Water, Wastewater, Stormwater, Solid Waste, Highways, Trees, Vehicle Maintenance and Grounds which are all managed by a Director.
The Norfolk Airpark (FAA airport code 32M) had one 2,700-foot (820 m) north–south runway and is about 2 miles (3 km) west of the town center. In recent years, however, the airpark has been closed down and is currently in a state of disrepair. A seven house cul-de-sac known as Tailwind Cir now exists where the hangars used to stand while the remaining airport property is now conservation land known as Leland Wild.
