Uneven steps are a hazard, and a sign the base is gone

Looking for steps & stairways in Wrentham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also right here in town.

Steps and stairways carry more weight, more traffic and more liability than any other hardscape on a property. People get hurt on a step that has settled an inch, or a riser that is taller than the others. They also get hurt on a tread that pitches toward the house and freezes into an ice sheet. Wrentham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every steps & stairways job in town.

We build steps on the same principle as everything else: a compacted crushed-stone base, proper footing, and materials set level with a slight forward pitch so water drains off. Riser heights are consistent from top to bottom, and treads are deep enough to be comfortable. The steps also tie into the walkway, patio or wall they connect to, so nothing moves independently.

Why Wrentham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Steps & Stairways

Wrentham is home base for Ten Four. Our yard sits on West Street, so a job anywhere in town is close-to-home work for us. That includes the historic common where Route 1A meets Route 140 as well as the Sheldonville neighborhoods on the west side. We know the properties here: large wooded lots with granite ledge just under the topsoil, and older village homes with mature trees and tired plantings. Then there are the newer subdivisions, where builder-grade grading and a thin layer of loam turn into drainage and lawn problems within a few seasons.

Much of Wrentham sits on glacial till over ledge, which means shallow bedrock in places, stones in every shovelful and soil that drains unevenly. Low ground around Lake Pearl and Lake Archer stays wet well into spring, while the higher, rockier lots dry out fast in July. That combination is exactly why base preparation, drainage and soil correction matter so much here. It is also why we look at the ground before we put a number on paper.

Steps & Stairways benefits for Wrentham, MA properties

  • Safe, even steps that feel solid underfoot
  • No more ice sheets on the treads
  • Steps that stay level through freeze and thaw
  • A front entry that makes the whole house look cared for
  • Slopes that are finally easy to move through

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Wrentham call us about steps & stairways because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Front steps that have sunk, tilted or pulled away from the house
  • Risers of different heights that trip people
  • Treads that hold water and freeze
  • Timber or railroad-tie steps rotting and collapsing
  • A steep slope with no safe way down
  • Loose stone steps that rock underfoot

What’s included

  • Excavation and compacted stone base or footing
  • Granite, bluestone, natural stone or block steps
  • Consistent riser heights and comfortable tread depth
  • Slight pitch on every tread for drainage
  • Tie-in to walkways, patios, walls and landings
  • Optional railings, lighting and landing pads

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope steps & stairways for a Wrentham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Steps & Stairways works in Wrentham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a steps & stairways job runs in Wrentham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Measure the rise and run

We measure the total rise and available run so every riser is the same height and every tread is deep enough to be comfortable and safe.

02

Build the base

Steps get a compacted base or a footing below the frost line, because a step that moves is a step that hurts someone.

03

Set the steps

We set granite treads, bluestone on block, or full segmental block steps level with a forward pitch and tie them into the adjoining hardscape.

04

Finish the approach

We finish the landings, walkway connections, railings and lighting so the whole path is safe from the driveway to the door.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price steps & stairways in Wrentham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Number of steps and the total rise

Material: granite, bluestone, natural stone or block

Excavation, footing and base the site requires

Railings, lighting and landings added

When to schedule Steps & Stairways in Wrentham, MA

Step and stairway work runs spring through early winter. Front entry steps often take just a few days to replace. Stairways through a slope are usually part of a wall or patio project, so they book best when planned a season ahead. If steps are actively unsafe, call now; we prioritize hazards.

Signs it’s time to call

  • Steps have settled, tilted or separated from the house
  • Someone has already tripped or slipped
  • Treads hold water or ice in winter
  • Timber steps are rotting or loose

Steps & Stairways questions from Wrentham, MA customers

How much do steps & stairways cost in Wrentham, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for steps & stairways in Wrentham, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Granite, bluestone or block?
Solid granite treads are the most durable and classic. Bluestone treads on a block riser are elegant and cost less. Full block steps match a block patio or wall. All of them sit on the same base.
Why do my old steps keep sinking?
No base, or a base that holds water. Steps are heavy and need a compacted stone base or a frost-depth footing.
Can you replace just the front steps?
Yes. Entry step replacement is one of our most common projects and usually takes a few days.

More Steps & Stairways questions, answered

Do you install railings?
We coordinate railings with a fabricator and install them as part of the project when needed.
How tall should each riser be?
Six to seven inches is comfortable and safe outdoors. The most important thing is that every riser is the same height.
Can you build steps into a hill?
Yes. Stairways through slopes, often with a wall on one or both sides, are exactly the kind of project we build.

Wrentham history and geography

History

In 1660, five men from Dedham were sent to explore the lakes near George Indian's wigwam and to report back to the selectmen what they found. The report of those men, Daniel Fisher, Anthony Fisher, Sgt. Fuller, Richard Ellis, and Richard Wheeler, was received with such enthusiasm that in March 1661 it was voted to start a new settlement there. The Town then voted to send Ellis and Timothy Dwight to go negotiate with King Philip to purchase the title to the area known as Wollomonopoag.
They purchased 600 acres of land for £24, 6s. The money was paid out of pocket by Captain Willett, who accompanied Ellis and Dwight. The Town voted to assess a tax upon the cow commons to repay him, but some thought the money should be paid by those who would be moving to the new village. The dispute resulted in Willet not being paid back for several years.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.9 square miles (59 km²), of which 22.2 square miles (57 km²) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) (3.14%) is water. Wrentham is bordered by Norfolk on the north, Foxboro on the east, Plainville and Cumberland, Rhode Island on the south, Bellingham on the southwest, and Franklin on the west. It has two large lakes towards the center of town, Lake Pearl and Lake Archer, as well as Mirror Lake on the Wrentham/Norfolk border and numerous smaller lakes.
Sheldonville, or West Wrentham, is a rural section of Wrentham located on the western leg of town. Sheldonville still maintains a unique identity as the old farming section of Wrentham, has active commercial orchards, and has its own ZIP Code (02070). Wrentham drains into four watersheds. They are the Charles River to the north, the Taunton River to the east, the Blackstone River to the west, and the Ten Mile River to the south.
Wrentham is the only town of that name in the United States. It is named after the village of Wrentham, Suffolk, England. The only other Wrentham is Wrentham, Alberta. Wrentham, Massachusetts, is by far the most populous of the three.
