Landscaper service in Wrentham, MA

A new lawn is ninety percent soil work

Looking for lawn installation in Wrentham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also right here in town.

Lawn installation is where a lot of money goes to waste, because the grass is the last and least expensive part. New construction lots, properties torn up by a pool or septic project, and old lawns beyond saving all have the same problem. Nobody ever prepared the soil under them to grow grass. Wrentham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every lawn installation job in town.

We start with the ground: rough and finish grading so water moves away from the house, and screened loam at real depth. Then come lime and amendments based on a soil test, and relief of the compaction left by construction equipment. Then we install the lawn the right way for the site and budget: sod for instant results, or seed or hydroseed for larger areas. You also get a simple watering plan so it establishes.

Why Wrentham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Lawn Installation

Wrentham is home base for Ten Four. Our yard sits on West Street, so a job anywhere in town is close-to-home work for us. That includes the historic common where Route 1A meets Route 140 as well as the Sheldonville neighborhoods on the west side. We know the properties here: large wooded lots with granite ledge just under the topsoil, and older village homes with mature trees and tired plantings. Then there are the newer subdivisions, where builder-grade grading and a thin layer of loam turn into drainage and lawn problems within a few seasons.

Much of Wrentham sits on glacial till over ledge, which means shallow bedrock in places, stones in every shovelful and soil that drains unevenly. Low ground around Lake Pearl and Lake Archer stays wet well into spring, while the higher, rockier lots dry out fast in July. That combination is exactly why base preparation, drainage and soil correction matter so much here. It is also why we look at the ground before we put a number on paper.

Lawn Installation benefits for Wrentham, MA properties

  • A lawn that establishes quickly on soil built to support it
  • Grading that solves drainage problems while building the lawn
  • Instant results with sod, or cost-effective coverage with seed and hydroseed
  • Fewer weeds, less watering and healthier grass long-term
  • A finished property instead of a dirt lot

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Wrentham call us about lawn installation because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A builder lawn seeded onto two inches of loam over fill
  • Bare and thin areas that never filled in
  • Standing water and ruts from bad grading
  • Sod that dried out and lifted because the soil under it was dead
  • A yard torn up by a pool, septic or construction project
  • Weeds outcompeting new seed

What’s included

  • Rough and finish grading for drainage
  • Screened loam installed at the correct depth
  • Soil test with lime and amendments
  • Sod, seed or hydroseed installation
  • Starter fertilizer and erosion control where needed
  • Watering and first-mow instructions

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope lawn installation for a Wrentham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Lawn Installation works in Wrentham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a lawn installation job runs in Wrentham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Fix the grade

Water has to move away from the house and off the lawn. We set the grade before anything else.

02

Build the soil

Screened loam at the right depth, lime and amendments from the soil test, and compaction relieved so roots can go down.

03

Install the lawn

Sod for instant coverage, seed or hydroseed for larger areas or budgets, with a starter feed and erosion control on slopes.

04

Establish it

You follow a short watering schedule, we advise on the first mow, and within a season it is a real lawn.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price lawn installation in Wrentham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Square footage of new lawn

Amount of grading, loam and amendment the soil needs

Sod versus seed versus hydroseed

Access, slopes and erosion control

When to schedule Lawn Installation in Wrentham, MA

Sod can go in through most of the growing season with water. Seed and hydroseed establish best from late August through early October, or in spring once the soil warms. New construction lawns should go in as soon as the site work wraps up so the soil does not erode or grow weeds all summer.

Signs it’s time to call

  • A new home with a builder lawn that never took
  • A yard torn up by construction, a pool or a septic replacement
  • More weeds and bare ground than grass
  • You want a real lawn this year, not a three-year recovery project

Lawn Installation questions from Wrentham, MA customers

How much does lawn installation cost in Wrentham, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for lawn installation in Wrentham, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Sod, seed or hydroseed?
Sod is instant and best for small to medium areas. Seed is the most economical for large areas and gives the widest choice of grass. Hydroseed covers large areas fast with good germination. We recommend based on the site, the season and your budget.
How much loam does a new lawn need?
Four to six inches of screened loam over a properly graded base for most lawns. Thin loam over fill is why builder lawns fail.
How long until I can use the lawn?
Sod is walkable in a couple of weeks and fully rooted in about a month. Seed and hydroseed take four to eight weeks to establish and a full season to mature.

More Lawn Installation questions, answered

Do you fix drainage as part of the lawn?
Yes. Grading is the first step of every lawn installation, and we add surface or subsurface drainage where the property needs it.
Will I need irrigation?
Not always, but new lawns need consistent water to establish. We give you a schedule, and irrigation makes it much easier on large lawns.
Can you replace an old, weedy lawn?
Yes. We remove or kill the old lawn, correct the soil and grade, and install new turf.

Wrentham history and geography

History

In 1660, five men from Dedham were sent to explore the lakes near George Indian's wigwam and to report back to the selectmen what they found. The report of those men, Daniel Fisher, Anthony Fisher, Sgt. Fuller, Richard Ellis, and Richard Wheeler, was received with such enthusiasm that in March 1661 it was voted to start a new settlement there. The Town then voted to send Ellis and Timothy Dwight to go negotiate with King Philip to purchase the title to the area known as Wollomonopoag.
They purchased 600 acres of land for £24, 6s. The money was paid out of pocket by Captain Willett, who accompanied Ellis and Dwight. The Town voted to assess a tax upon the cow commons to repay him, but some thought the money should be paid by those who would be moving to the new village. The dispute resulted in Willet not being paid back for several years.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.9 square miles (59 km²), of which 22.2 square miles (57 km²) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) (3.14%) is water. Wrentham is bordered by Norfolk on the north, Foxboro on the east, Plainville and Cumberland, Rhode Island on the south, Bellingham on the southwest, and Franklin on the west. It has two large lakes towards the center of town, Lake Pearl and Lake Archer, as well as Mirror Lake on the Wrentham/Norfolk border and numerous smaller lakes.
Sheldonville, or West Wrentham, is a rural section of Wrentham located on the western leg of town. Sheldonville still maintains a unique identity as the old farming section of Wrentham, has active commercial orchards, and has its own ZIP Code (02070). Wrentham drains into four watersheds. They are the Charles River to the north, the Taunton River to the east, the Blackstone River to the west, and the Ten Mile River to the south.
Wrentham is the only town of that name in the United States. It is named after the village of Wrentham, Suffolk, England. The only other Wrentham is Wrentham, Alberta. Wrentham, Massachusetts, is by far the most populous of the three.
