Landscaper service in Norfolk, MA

A new lawn is ninety percent soil work

Looking for lawn installation in Norfolk, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Lawn installation is where a lot of money goes to waste, because the grass is the last and least expensive part. New construction lots, properties torn up by a pool or septic project, and old lawns beyond saving all have the same problem. Nobody ever prepared the soil under them to grow grass. Norfolk homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every lawn installation job in town.

We start with the ground: rough and finish grading so water moves away from the house, and screened loam at real depth. Then come lime and amendments based on a soil test, and relief of the compaction left by construction equipment. Then we install the lawn the right way for the site and budget: sod for instant results, or seed or hydroseed for larger areas. You also get a simple watering plan so it establishes.

Why Norfolk, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Lawn Installation

Norfolk is a small, wooded residential town directly north of our Wrentham yard, so we are in Norfolk almost every week. Most properties here are single-family homes on generous lots: subdivisions built from the 1980s onward, and older homes along Main Street near the town center and the MBTA station. There are also rural parcels out toward the Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and the Charles River side of town.

The ground in Norfolk is a mix of rocky glacial till on the uplands and wet, peaty soil in the lowlands. That wet ground sits near the Stop River, the Charles River and the ponds. Many lots have a high seasonal water table. It shows up as a soggy lawn in April, a heaving walkway in March and water in the basement after a thaw. Nearly every home is on a septic system, so we plan equipment routes and any excavation around the leach field before we start.

Lawn Installation benefits for Norfolk, MA properties

  • A lawn that establishes quickly on soil built to support it
  • Grading that solves drainage problems while building the lawn
  • Instant results with sod, or cost-effective coverage with seed and hydroseed
  • Fewer weeds, less watering and healthier grass long-term
  • A finished property instead of a dirt lot

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Norfolk call us about lawn installation because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A builder lawn seeded onto two inches of loam over fill
  • Bare and thin areas that never filled in
  • Standing water and ruts from bad grading
  • Sod that dried out and lifted because the soil under it was dead
  • A yard torn up by a pool, septic or construction project
  • Weeds outcompeting new seed

What’s included

  • Rough and finish grading for drainage
  • Screened loam installed at the correct depth
  • Soil test with lime and amendments
  • Sod, seed or hydroseed installation
  • Starter fertilizer and erosion control where needed
  • Watering and first-mow instructions

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope lawn installation for a Norfolk property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Lawn Installation works in Norfolk, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a lawn installation job runs in Norfolk, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Fix the grade

Water has to move away from the house and off the lawn. We set the grade before anything else.

02

Build the soil

Screened loam at the right depth, lime and amendments from the soil test, and compaction relieved so roots can go down.

03

Install the lawn

Sod for instant coverage, seed or hydroseed for larger areas or budgets, with a starter feed and erosion control on slopes.

04

Establish it

You follow a short watering schedule, we advise on the first mow, and within a season it is a real lawn.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price lawn installation in Norfolk, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Square footage of new lawn

Amount of grading, loam and amendment the soil needs

Sod versus seed versus hydroseed

Access, slopes and erosion control

When to schedule Lawn Installation in Norfolk, MA

Sod can go in through most of the growing season with water. Seed and hydroseed establish best from late August through early October, or in spring once the soil warms. New construction lawns should go in as soon as the site work wraps up so the soil does not erode or grow weeds all summer.

Signs it’s time to call

  • A new home with a builder lawn that never took
  • A yard torn up by construction, a pool or a septic replacement
  • More weeds and bare ground than grass
  • You want a real lawn this year, not a three-year recovery project

Why choose Ten Four for Lawn Installation in Norfolk, MA

Certainly, plenty of people will quote you lawn installation in Norfolk. But here is what you get with Ten Four Landscape & Construction that you do not get everywhere else:

  • Soil first — grading, loam and amendments before any grass goes down.
  • Sod, seed or hydroseed — the right method for the site and budget, not one-size-fits-all.
  • Established, not just installed — watering and first-mow guidance until the lawn is on its own.
  • Licensed, insured and local since 2012 — the same owner-operator since day one. We also serve Norfolk from our yard at 2570 West St in Wrentham, about twenty minutes away.
  • Everything in writing — a free written estimate with the scope spelled out before any work starts.

The job might be near Highland Lake, around Norfolk Center or out on the roads toward Millis and Medfield. Either way, we treat Norfolk like our own town, because for several of our crew it is.

Lawn Installation questions from Norfolk, MA customers

How much does lawn installation cost in Norfolk, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for lawn installation in Norfolk, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Sod, seed or hydroseed?
Sod is instant and best for small to medium areas. Seed is the most economical for large areas and gives the widest choice of grass. Hydroseed covers large areas fast with good germination. We recommend based on the site, the season and your budget.
How much loam does a new lawn need?
Four to six inches of screened loam over a properly graded base for most lawns. Thin loam over fill is why builder lawns fail.
How long until I can use the lawn?
Sod is walkable in a couple of weeks and fully rooted in about a month. Seed and hydroseed take four to eight weeks to establish and a full season to mature.

More Lawn Installation questions, answered

Do you fix drainage as part of the lawn?
Yes. Grading is the first step of every lawn installation, and we add surface or subsurface drainage where the property needs it.
Will I need irrigation?
Not always, but new lawns need consistent water to establish. We give you a schedule, and irrigation makes it much easier on large lawns.
Can you replace an old, weedy lawn?
Yes. We remove or kill the old lawn, correct the soil and grade, and install new turf.

Norfolk history and geography

History

Norfolk is a suburban town on the periphery of metropolitan Boston, located on an upper valley of the Charles River. The land was originally part of Dedham, which was incorporated in 1636. There were a half dozen small farms in the area after 1669, the result of a determined effort to populate the colonial frontier, despite the remoteness of the area. Wrentham separated from Dedham in 1673; what is now Norfolk was in the northern part of Wrentham. The farms were abandoned during King Philip's War in 1675–76, but repopulated later that century.
As further settlement occurred in the late 17th and 18th centuries, agriculture and cattle grazing were joined by lumbering and planting of orchards. Small villages formed around sawmills and gristmills including City Mills (1680), Mann Pond/Highland Lake (after 1691), and Pondville (after 1730). The village center of North Wrentham formed in the late 18th century. After 1812, three cotton manufacturing companies were established at Stony Brook, and later in the 19th century George Campbell's paper mill was opened at Highland Lake making heavy wrapping and building papers. The Norfolk County Railroad opened in 1849, with North Wrentham station near the village center. North Wrentham separated from Wrentham in 1870 and was incorporated as Norfolk.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39 km²), of which 14.8 square miles (38 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²) (2.30%) is water.

Infrastructure

The Town of Norfolk instituted a Department of Public Works in 2004 which consolidated much of its infrastructure and is now responsible for eight divisions. These Divisions are Water, Wastewater, Stormwater, Solid Waste, Highways, Trees, Vehicle Maintenance and Grounds which are all managed by a Director.
The Norfolk Airpark (FAA airport code 32M) had one 2,700-foot (820 m) north–south runway and is about 2 miles (3 km) west of the town center. In recent years, however, the airpark has been closed down and is currently in a state of disrepair. A seven house cul-de-sac known as Tailwind Cir now exists where the hangars used to stand while the remaining airport property is now conservation land known as Leland Wild.
