Hydroseed is the fastest way to a real lawn on a big site

Looking for hydroseeding in Norfolk, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Hydroseeding is the right answer for the big jobs. Think of a new construction lot, or a yard torn up by a pool or septic project. It also fits a slope that washes out every time someone seeds it, or a lawn too large for sod to make sense. The slurry holds the seed in place, keeps it moist and gives it a head start that broadcast seeding cannot match. Norfolk homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every hydroseeding job in town.

The lawn is still only as good as the soil, so we grade, loam and amend before we spray. We also choose a seed blend for your sun, shade and use rather than a generic contractor mix. Then the hydroseed goes down in one even pass, green for a few weeks so you can see the coverage. With a simple watering schedule, the lawn is up in a couple of weeks and mowable in about a month.

Why Norfolk, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Hydroseeding

Norfolk is a small, wooded residential town directly north of our Wrentham yard, so we are in Norfolk almost every week. Most properties here are single-family homes on generous lots: subdivisions built from the 1980s onward, and older homes along Main Street near the town center and the MBTA station. There are also rural parcels out toward the Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and the Charles River side of town.

The ground in Norfolk is a mix of rocky glacial till on the uplands and wet, peaty soil in the lowlands. That wet ground sits near the Stop River, the Charles River and the ponds. Many lots have a high seasonal water table. It shows up as a soggy lawn in April, a heaving walkway in March and water in the basement after a thaw. Nearly every home is on a septic system, so we plan equipment routes and any excavation around the leach field before we start.

Hydroseeding benefits for Norfolk, MA properties

  • Fast, even germination across large areas
  • Seed that stays put on slopes and in rain
  • A fraction of the cost of sod on big lawns
  • A blend chosen for the site instead of a generic mix
  • Erosion stopped while the lawn establishes

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Norfolk call us about hydroseeding because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A new construction lot with no lawn and erosion every time it rains
  • A yard destroyed by a pool, septic or foundation project
  • Broadcast seed that washed away or came in patchy
  • Slopes that will not hold seed
  • A sod quote that is out of reach for a large area
  • A contractor mix full of weeds and the wrong grass

What’s included

  • Grading, loam and soil amendment as needed
  • Seed blend matched to sun, shade and use
  • Hydroseed application with fiber mulch, tackifier and fertilizer
  • Erosion control on slopes
  • Watering schedule and first-mow guidance
  • Follow-up overseeding of any thin spots

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope hydroseeding for a Norfolk property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Hydroseeding works in Norfolk, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a hydroseeding job runs in Norfolk, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Prepare the soil

Grade for drainage, add loam where needed, correct pH and relieve compaction. Hydroseed on bad soil is still a bad lawn.

02

Match the seed

A blend chosen for your property: sun, shade, traffic and how much maintenance you want.

03

Spray it on

One even pass of seed, fiber mulch, tackifier and starter fertilizer that locks the seed to the soil, even on slopes.

04

Water and establish

You water lightly and often for the first weeks. Germination in seven to fourteen days, first mow around four weeks.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price hydroseeding in Norfolk, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Square footage to seed

Soil preparation, grading and loam needed

Seed blend and slope or erosion control

Access for the hydroseed truck and hose runs

When to schedule Hydroseeding in Norfolk, MA

Late August through early October is ideal, and spring from mid-April through May works well once the soil warms. Summer hydroseeding is possible with irrigation. New construction sites should get seed as soon as the final grade goes in so the soil does not erode or grow weeds.

Signs it’s time to call

  • A large area of bare soil after construction
  • Erosion on a slope or along a driveway
  • A sod estimate that does not fit the budget
  • Hand seeding that failed once already

Why choose Ten Four for Hydroseeding in Norfolk, MA

Certainly, plenty of people will quote you hydroseeding in Norfolk. But here is what you get with Ten Four Landscape & Construction that you do not get everywhere else:

  • Soil first, then seed — grading, loam and amendments come before the spray.
  • The right blend — seed chosen for your sun, shade and use.
  • Our own equipment — we prepare, spray and follow up ourselves.
  • Licensed, insured and local since 2012 — the same owner-operator since day one. We also serve Norfolk from our yard at 2570 West St in Wrentham, about twenty minutes away.
  • Everything in writing — a free written estimate with the scope spelled out before any work starts.

The job might be near Highland Lake, around Norfolk Center or out on the roads toward Millis and Medfield. Either way, we treat Norfolk like our own town, because for several of our crew it is.

Hydroseeding questions from Norfolk, MA customers

How much does hydroseeding cost in Norfolk, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for hydroseeding in Norfolk, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
How does hydroseeding compare to sod?
Sod is instant and costs several times more. Hydroseed takes a few weeks to establish and is far more economical for large areas, with excellent results on prepared soil.
How long until it germinates?
Seven to fourteen days with proper watering, with a first mow around four weeks and a mature lawn by the following season.
Can you hydroseed a slope?
Yes. The fiber mulch and tackifier hold the seed on slopes where broadcast seed washes away, and we add erosion control where needed.

More Hydroseeding questions, answered

What do I need to do after?
Keep the soil moist for the first two to three weeks with light, frequent watering, and stay off the area until the first mow.
Does the green color matter?
The green dye just shows coverage so we miss nothing. It fades in a couple of weeks as the grass comes in.
Will the lawn have weeds?
Some annual weeds always show up in a new lawn and mow out. We use clean seed and follow up with weed control and overseeding of thin spots.

Norfolk history and geography

History

Norfolk is a suburban town on the periphery of metropolitan Boston, located on an upper valley of the Charles River. The land was originally part of Dedham, which was incorporated in 1636. There were a half dozen small farms in the area after 1669, the result of a determined effort to populate the colonial frontier, despite the remoteness of the area. Wrentham separated from Dedham in 1673; what is now Norfolk was in the northern part of Wrentham. The farms were abandoned during King Philip's War in 1675–76, but repopulated later that century.
As further settlement occurred in the late 17th and 18th centuries, agriculture and cattle grazing were joined by lumbering and planting of orchards. Small villages formed around sawmills and gristmills including City Mills (1680), Mann Pond/Highland Lake (after 1691), and Pondville (after 1730). The village center of North Wrentham formed in the late 18th century. After 1812, three cotton manufacturing companies were established at Stony Brook, and later in the 19th century George Campbell's paper mill was opened at Highland Lake making heavy wrapping and building papers. The Norfolk County Railroad opened in 1849, with North Wrentham station near the village center. North Wrentham separated from Wrentham in 1870 and was incorporated as Norfolk.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39 km²), of which 14.8 square miles (38 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²) (2.30%) is water.

Infrastructure

The Town of Norfolk instituted a Department of Public Works in 2004 which consolidated much of its infrastructure and is now responsible for eight divisions. These Divisions are Water, Wastewater, Stormwater, Solid Waste, Highways, Trees, Vehicle Maintenance and Grounds which are all managed by a Director.
The Norfolk Airpark (FAA airport code 32M) had one 2,700-foot (820 m) north–south runway and is about 2 miles (3 km) west of the town center. In recent years, however, the airpark has been closed down and is currently in a state of disrepair. A seven house cul-de-sac known as Tailwind Cir now exists where the hangars used to stand while the remaining airport property is now conservation land known as Leland Wild.
