In short

Dethatching in Norfolk, MA: Dethatching removes the mat of dead stems and roots that builds up between the grass and the soil. When it gets thicker than half an inch, water and fertilizer cannot get through and the lawn thins, browns and invites pests. We power rake it out, haul it away and set the lawn up to recover. If the lawn feels spongy, thatch is the problem

Looking for dethatching in Norfolk, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Dethatching is the lawn service people do not know they need until they see the pile. A thick thatch layer makes a lawn feel spongy, sheds water, shelters grubs and fungus and blocks fertilizer, so the more you feed and water, the worse it looks. Norfolk homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every dethatching job in town.

We check the thatch depth first, because a thin layer is healthy and deserves to stay put. When it is over half an inch, we power rake the lawn to pull the dead material out and remove it. Then we follow with overseeding and a feeding, so the lawn fills back in thicker than before. Combined with core aeration, it is the reset an old, tired lawn needs.

Why Norfolk, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Dethatching

Norfolk is a small, wooded residential town directly north of our Wrentham yard, so we are in Norfolk almost every week. Most properties here are single-family homes on generous lots: subdivisions built from the 1980s onward, and older homes along Main Street near the town center and the MBTA station. There are also rural parcels out toward the Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary and the Charles River side of town.

The ground in Norfolk is a mix of rocky glacial till on the uplands and wet, peaty soil in the lowlands. That wet ground sits near the Stop River, the Charles River and the ponds. Many lots have a high seasonal water table. It shows up as a soggy lawn in April, a heaving walkway in March and water in the basement after a thaw. Nearly every home is on a septic system, so we plan equipment routes and any excavation around the leach field before we start.

Dethatching benefits for Norfolk, MA properties

  • Water, air and fertilizer reach the roots again
  • Fewer grubs, fungus and disease problems
  • A thicker, greener lawn after overseeding
  • Better results from every other lawn treatment
  • A lawn that responds instead of just surviving

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Norfolk call us about dethatching because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A lawn that feels spongy and springy underfoot
  • Water running off instead of soaking in
  • Fertilizer that does not seem to do anything
  • Brown patches, fungus and grub damage every year
  • A lawn with years of mowing and feeding behind it that never improved
  • Dead material choking out new growth

What’s included

  • Thatch depth check and honest recommendation
  • Power raking across the lawn
  • Removal and haul-away of thatch
  • Overseeding to fill in thinned areas
  • Feeding to speed recovery
  • Optional core aeration for compacted soil

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope dethatching for a Norfolk property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Dethatching works in Norfolk, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a dethatching job runs in Norfolk, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Check the thatch

We measure the layer. Under half an inch is normal and we will tell you so. Over that, dethatching pays off.

02

Power rake

A dethatching machine pulls the dead material up from the base of the grass across the whole lawn.

03

Remove it

We rake, collect and haul away the thatch, which is often a surprising amount of material.

04

Seed and feed

Overseeding and a feeding help the lawn recover quickly and fill in thicker.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price dethatching in Norfolk, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Lawn square footage

Thatch thickness and how much material we have to remove

Overseeding and fertilizer added

Combining with core aeration

When to schedule Dethatching in Norfolk, MA

Early fall is the best time for cool-season lawns, when the grass is growing strongly and can recover fast, with late spring as a second option. We avoid dethatching in summer heat or when the lawn is under stress. Pair it with fall aeration and overseeding for the biggest improvement.

Signs it’s time to call

  • The lawn feels spongy when you walk on it
  • Water beads and runs off the surface
  • Grass is thin and brown despite feeding and watering
  • You can see a thick layer of dead material at the base of the grass

Why choose Ten Four for Dethatching in Norfolk, MA

Certainly, plenty of people will quote you dethatching in Norfolk. But here is what you get with Ten Four Landscape & Construction that you do not get everywhere else:

  • We check before we sell it — if the thatch is thin, we tell you to skip dethatching.
  • Removed and hauled — the thatch leaves the property, not just the lawn.
  • Paired with recovery — seeding and feeding so the lawn comes back better.
  • Licensed, insured and local since 2012 — the same owner-operator since day one. We also serve Norfolk from our yard at 2570 West St in Wrentham, about twenty minutes away.
  • Everything in writing — a free written estimate with the scope spelled out before any work starts.

The job might be near Highland Lake, around Norfolk Center or out on the roads toward Millis and Medfield. Either way, we treat Norfolk like our own town, because for several of our crew it is.

Dethatching questions from Norfolk, MA customers

How much does dethatching cost in Norfolk, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for dethatching in Norfolk, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
What is thatch?
A layer of dead stems, roots and debris between the grass and the soil. A thin layer is healthy; a thick one suffocates the lawn.
How do I know if my lawn needs dethatching?
If it feels spongy, sheds water or has more than half an inch of dead material at the base of the grass, it needs it. We check and tell you honestly.
Is dethatching the same as aeration?
No. Dethatching removes the dead layer on top; aeration relieves compaction in the soil. Many lawns need both, and they work well together.

More Dethatching questions, answered

When is the best time?
Early fall, when the lawn is growing strongly and can recover. Late spring is the second-best window.
Will the lawn look worse afterward?
For a couple of weeks, yes; dethatching is aggressive. With overseeding and feeding it comes back thicker within a month.
How often should I dethatch?
Only when thatch builds up, typically every few years. Regular aeration and proper mowing slow the buildup.

Norfolk history and geography

History

Norfolk is a suburban town on the periphery of metropolitan Boston, located on an upper valley of the Charles River. The land was originally part of Dedham, which was incorporated in 1636. There were a half dozen small farms in the area after 1669, the result of a determined effort to populate the colonial frontier, despite the remoteness of the area. Wrentham separated from Dedham in 1673; what is now Norfolk was in the northern part of Wrentham. The farms were abandoned during King Philip's War in 1675–76, but repopulated later that century.
As further settlement occurred in the late 17th and 18th centuries, agriculture and cattle grazing were joined by lumbering and planting of orchards. Small villages formed around sawmills and gristmills including City Mills (1680), Mann Pond/Highland Lake (after 1691), and Pondville (after 1730). The village center of North Wrentham formed in the late 18th century. After 1812, three cotton manufacturing companies were established at Stony Brook, and later in the 19th century George Campbell's paper mill was opened at Highland Lake making heavy wrapping and building papers. The Norfolk County Railroad opened in 1849, with North Wrentham station near the village center. North Wrentham separated from Wrentham in 1870 and was incorporated as Norfolk.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.2 square miles (39 km²), of which 14.8 square miles (38 km²) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²) (2.30%) is water.

Infrastructure

The Town of Norfolk instituted a Department of Public Works in 2004 which consolidated much of its infrastructure and is now responsible for eight divisions. These Divisions are Water, Wastewater, Stormwater, Solid Waste, Highways, Trees, Vehicle Maintenance and Grounds which are all managed by a Director.
The Norfolk Airpark (FAA airport code 32M) had one 2,700-foot (820 m) north–south runway and is about 2 miles (3 km) west of the town center. In recent years, however, the airpark has been closed down and is currently in a state of disrepair. A seven house cul-de-sac known as Tailwind Cir now exists where the hangars used to stand while the remaining airport property is now conservation land known as Leland Wild.
