How much sand do I need?

First, measure the length and width of the area in feet and multiply them to get square feet. Then multiply by the depth in inches and divide by 324. The answer is cubic yards, which is how the yard sells sand. Under pavers, sand is used as a thin, screeded bed of about 1 inch. For leveling or filling, however, depth depends on how low the area is.

For example, a 20 by 25 foot area is 500 square feet. At 1 inches deep, that works out to about 1.5 yards. In practice, we suggest rounding up by half a yard, because edges, low spots and settling always take a little extra. Delivery or pickup at the yard

There are two ways to get this material from us. First, we can deliver it. How to screed sand for pavers

1. Compact the base. Build and compact a stone base first. Then check the slope with a level.
2. Set rails. Lay two pipes on the base as screed rails. Next, spread sand between them.
3. Strike it off. Pull a straight board across the rails. As a result, the sand bed is flat and even.
4. Lay the pavers. Place pavers on the sand without stepping on the screeded area.
5. Compact and sweep. Finally, compact the pavers and sweep fine material into the joints.

Sand also helps in the lawn. If you have low spots or a bumpy yard, a thin mix of sand and loam spread into the dips levels the surface over a season. However, do not bury the grass completely; instead, spread thin and let it grow through before adding more.

For pool installations and above-ground pools, a level, compacted sand base is standard. In that case, follow the pool maker's instructions for depth, and tell us the pool size so we can help size the order.

Behind retaining walls and around foundation drains, sand or stone backfill lets water drain down to the pipe instead of pushing against the wall. Likewise, sand makes a gentle bedding layer for water lines and conduit, because it will not damage the pipe as it settles. So even on jobs where sand is not the star, it quietly protects the work around it.

Choosing the right base material

Base materials do quiet but important work. They level a surface, carry weight and move water away. So the right choice depends on what sits on top and how much traffic it gets.
