Mulch is the cheapest thing that makes a property look finished, if you do it right

Looking for mulch & edging in Bellingham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about fifteen minutes away.

Mulch and edging is the fastest visible upgrade a property can get, and also the job most often done wrong. Mulch dumped on top of weeds, piled against tree trunks and shrub stems, or spread so deep it suffocates the roots costs money now and creates problems later. Bellingham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every mulch & edging job in town.

Our crew cuts a clean, deep edge on every bed first and pulls or treats the weeds. Then we spread mulch at the right depth for the material, tapering it away from every stem and trunk. The result is a bed that holds moisture, blocks weeds and frames the plants instead of burying them, with an edge that stays crisp until the next visit.

Why Bellingham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Mulch & Edging

Bellingham stretches from the North Bellingham and Caryville villages on the Charles River down to the neighborhoods off Route 126 and Route 140. Interstate 495 also runs right through the middle of town. Most of our Bellingham work is residential: split-levels and colonials from the 1960s through the 1990s, newer developments off Hartford Avenue and Lake Street, and homes around Silver Lake. We also care for commercial properties on the Route 126 retail strip that need dependable year-round care.

Bellingham soils are generally sandier and stonier than the towns east of us, with fast-draining outwash near the Charles River and its ponds and heavier till on the uplands. Fast drainage sounds like a good thing until the lawn browns out in a dry July and the mulch beds bake. So soil building, watering habits and the right plant choices matter more here than almost anywhere else we work.

Mulch & Edging benefits for Bellingham, MA properties

  • Beds look defined and finished from the street
  • Mulch holds soil moisture and keeps roots cooler in summer
  • Mulch suppresses weeds instead of feeding them
  • Plants stay healthier with mulch kept off the stems
  • Crisp edges make every other part of the yard look sharper

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Bellingham call us about mulch & edging because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Mulch volcanoes piled against trees, rotting the bark
  • Weeds mulched over instead of pulled, so they push through in weeks
  • Bed edges that disappear into the lawn by June
  • Cheap dyed mulch that fades and floats away in the first storm
  • Mulch spread so deep the roots cannot breathe
  • Beds that look good for two weeks and neglected for the rest of the year

What’s included

  • Re-cutting every bed edge with a clean, deep line
  • Weeding and pre-treating the beds before mulch goes down
  • Quality mulch spread at the correct depth
  • Mulch kept away from stems, trunks and siding
  • Clean-up of all lawn and hardscape surfaces afterward
  • Optional mid-season touch-up and re-edge

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope mulch & edging for a Bellingham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Mulch & Edging works in Bellingham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a mulch & edging job runs in Bellingham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Measure the beds

We measure every bed so the mulch quantity is right and the price is exact, not a guess that leaves you short or overcharged.

02

Edge and weed

We cut a clean, deep edge on every bed, pull or treat the weeds, and rake any tired mulch to break the crust.

03

Spread at the right depth

Two to three inches of fresh mulch, tapered away from every stem and trunk so plants stay healthy.

04

Clean up

We blow the lawn, walks and driveway clean, so the only thing left behind is a finished bed.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price mulch & edging in Bellingham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Total bed square footage and mulch depth needed

Mulch type: natural hemlock, pine, black or brown

How much edging and weeding the beds need first

Access for wheelbarrows or a machine to move material

When to schedule Mulch & Edging in Bellingham, MA

Most mulch goes down between mid-April and early June, once the beds are clean and the soil has warmed. A second, lighter application in early fall keeps beds looking sharp through the holidays. We book spring mulch weeks in advance, so get on the list early.

Signs it’s time to call

  • The mulch has faded to gray and the beds look tired
  • Weeds are winning in the beds
  • Bed edges have blurred into the lawn
  • You are planning a party, a listing or a season of curb appeal

Mulch & Edging questions from Bellingham, MA customers

How much does mulch & edging cost in Bellingham, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for mulch & edging in Bellingham, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Which mulch should I choose?
Natural hemlock and pine bark hold color and break down into good soil. Black and brown mulch give a uniform look. We will tell you honestly what suits your beds and budget.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is right for most beds. Deeper than that smothers roots and invites pests.
Do you remove the old mulch?
Usually no. We rake the old layer to break the crust and top-dress over it. If the old mulch is more than four inches deep, we remove some.

More Mulch & Edging questions, answered

Will mulch stop the weeds?
It suppresses them, especially when we weed the beds first. Nothing stops weeds forever, which is why our maintenance program includes bed care between mulchings.
Can you mulch around a septic system or leach field?
Yes, with light equipment and no heavy loads over the field. We plan the route before we start.
How often do beds need fresh mulch?
Once a year in spring for most properties, with an optional light fall refresh. Well-maintained beds need less each year.

Bellingham history and geography

History

The area of the town south of the Charles River constituted the southwestern corner of the Dedham Grant, which sprouted much of what has become Norfolk County. The land was swampy, and the town of Dedham did not believe it worthy of settlement. The area north of the river would be purchased by Edward Rawson, and due to the settlement of borders with the surrounding communities, these two areas would eventually merge. Most of the land to be called Bellingham was originally a portion of Dedham.
The first land bought in Bellingham that was Dedham was purchased in 1696 by a man who believed that that government is best which governs least. By 1713, there were enough citizens to warrant village meetings in the area. By 1718, the village petitioned for separation, and the town officially incorporated on November 27, 1719. The village was originally named "Westham" (short for "West Dedham"), but at the time of incorporation, its name was changed to Bellingham without record of the benefactor. The town is named for Richard Bellingham, an early governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The town was founded with a Pilgrim (Congregationalist) meeting house, like all the towns in the colony at the time. However, this church would dissolve before the middle of the century, replaced with a Baptist church. John Leland, a Baptist minister, who was a major supporter of James Madison and the First Amendment to the Constitution, was baptized in Bellingham's Baptist church in 1775.

Geography and transportation

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.0 square miles (49.2 km²), of which 18.5 square miles (47.9 km²) is land and 0.5 square mile (1.3 km) (2.58%) is water. The town's mean elevation is 293 feet (89 m) above sea level.
Bellingham is located at the southwestern corner of Norfolk County, just northwest of the northeastern corner of Rhode Island. It is bordered by Medway on the north, Franklin to the east, Wrentham to the southeast; Woonsocket, Rhode Island, on the south; and Blackstone, Hopedale and Mendon to the west, and Milford to the northwest. Bellingham is 23 miles (37 km) southeast of Worcester, 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Boston, and 20 miles (30 km) north of Providence.

Education

As of 2024, there are two elementary schools (Stallbrook, and DiPietro), one middle school (Bellingham Memorial), and two high schools (Bellingham High School and Keough Memorial Academy). The Clara Macy Elementary school was closed before the start of the 2015–2016 school year and was demolished the following year. The children who attended Clara Macy school in the 2014–2015 school year were divided geographically between the remaining two elementary schools. Joseph F. DiPietro Elementary School was formally known as South Elementary school for the majority of its history.
In 2019, Bellingham High School ranked 205 in Massachusetts as a result many families elect to school choice to nearby towns of Medway and Holliston or go to private and technical schools, Tri-County in Franklin, Blackstone Valley Tech in Upton, and Mount St. Charles in Woonsocket, RI. Bellingham High's sports teams have competed in the Tri-Valley League since the leagues induction in 1966. Bellingham is known for producing good baseball, softball and football teams and are not considered an easy win in other sports by the other members of the league.
