Plants die from the wrong spot and the wrong hole, not bad luck

Looking for planting in Bellingham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about fifteen minutes away.

Planting is where a landscape gets its character, and where people make the most common mistakes. The wrong plant in the wrong spot, a hole dug too deep or too narrow, a root ball left bound, and mulch piled against the trunk all kill plants. They do it slowly, over two or three years, long after the receipt is gone. Bellingham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every planting job in town.

We start with the site: how much sun each bed gets, how wet the soil stays, how much deer and winter wind it faces. Then we choose plants that will actually thrive there, install them at the correct depth in amended soil with the roots loosened, water them in and mulch them properly. We are not tied to one nursery, so you get the right plant, not the one on sale that week.

Why Bellingham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Planting

Bellingham stretches from the North Bellingham and Caryville villages on the Charles River down to the neighborhoods off Route 126 and Route 140. Interstate 495 also runs right through the middle of town. Most of our Bellingham work is residential: split-levels and colonials from the 1960s through the 1990s, newer developments off Hartford Avenue and Lake Street, and homes around Silver Lake. We also care for commercial properties on the Route 126 retail strip that need dependable year-round care.

Bellingham soils are generally sandier and stonier than the towns east of us, with fast-draining outwash near the Charles River and its ponds and heavier till on the uplands. Fast drainage sounds like a good thing until the lawn browns out in a dry July and the mulch beds bake. So soil building, watering habits and the right plant choices matter more here than almost anywhere else we work.

Planting benefits for Bellingham, MA properties

  • Plants that thrive because they belong where we put them
  • A landscape that looks intentional, not accidental
  • Privacy, shade and seasonal color that improve every year
  • Less replacement, less watering and less frustration
  • Curb appeal that adds value to the property

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Bellingham call us about planting because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Foundation shrubs that outgrew the space and cover the windows
  • Plants dying one by one because the spot is too wet, too dry or too shady
  • Deer eating everything the day after it goes in
  • A privacy screen that never went in, so the neighbors are still right there
  • Bare beds with mulch but no plants
  • Trees planted too deep and slowly declining

What’s included

  • Site assessment for sun, soil, moisture and deer
  • Plant selection and a written planting plan
  • Bed preparation and soil amendment
  • Correct planting depth with roots loosened
  • Watering in and mulching at the right depth
  • Establishment guidance and a plant guarantee

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope planting for a Bellingham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Planting works in Bellingham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a planting job runs in Bellingham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Read the site

We check sun, shade, soil and drainage bed by bed, and ask how much maintenance you want to do.

02

Choose the plants

A plan with plants that suit each spot and the look you want, sized correctly for the space at maturity, not just at the nursery.

03

Prepare and plant

We amend the beds, dig holes wide rather than deep, loosen the roots, and set each plant at the right depth before watering it in.

04

Mulch and establish

We apply mulch at the correct depth away from the stems, and you get a simple watering schedule for the first season.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price planting in Bellingham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Number, size and type of plants

Bed preparation and soil amendment needed

Removal of existing plants or lawn

Delivery and access for larger trees

When to schedule Planting in Bellingham, MA

Spring and fall are the best planting seasons in Massachusetts: cool air, warm soil and reliable rain. Container plants can go in through summer with attentive watering. Evergreens and screens do best planted by early fall so roots establish before winter.

Signs it’s time to call

Bellingham history and geography

History

The area of the town south of the Charles River constituted the southwestern corner of the Dedham Grant, which sprouted much of what has become Norfolk County. The land was swampy, and the town of Dedham did not believe it worthy of settlement. The area north of the river would be purchased by Edward Rawson, and due to the settlement of borders with the surrounding communities, these two areas would eventually merge. Most of the land to be called Bellingham was originally a portion of Dedham.
The first land bought in Bellingham that was Dedham was purchased in 1696 by a man who believed that that government is best which governs least. By 1713, there were enough citizens to warrant village meetings in the area. By 1718, the village petitioned for separation, and the town officially incorporated on November 27, 1719. The village was originally named "Westham" (short for "West Dedham"), but at the time of incorporation, its name was changed to Bellingham without record of the benefactor. The town is named for Richard Bellingham, an early governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The town was founded with a Pilgrim (Congregationalist) meeting house, like all the towns in the colony at the time. However, this church would dissolve before the middle of the century, replaced with a Baptist church. John Leland, a Baptist minister, who was a major supporter of James Madison and the First Amendment to the Constitution, was baptized in Bellingham's Baptist church in 1775.

Geography and transportation

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.0 square miles (49.2 km²), of which 18.5 square miles (47.9 km²) is land and 0.5 square mile (1.3 km) (2.58%) is water. The town's mean elevation is 293 feet (89 m) above sea level.
Bellingham is located at the southwestern corner of Norfolk County, just northwest of the northeastern corner of Rhode Island. It is bordered by Medway on the north, Franklin to the east, Wrentham to the southeast; Woonsocket, Rhode Island, on the south; and Blackstone, Hopedale and Mendon to the west, and Milford to the northwest. Bellingham is 23 miles (37 km) southeast of Worcester, 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Boston, and 20 miles (30 km) north of Providence.

Education

As of 2024, there are two elementary schools (Stallbrook, and DiPietro), one middle school (Bellingham Memorial), and two high schools (Bellingham High School and Keough Memorial Academy). The Clara Macy Elementary school was closed before the start of the 2015–2016 school year and was demolished the following year. The children who attended Clara Macy school in the 2014–2015 school year were divided geographically between the remaining two elementary schools. Joseph F. DiPietro Elementary School was formally known as South Elementary school for the majority of its history.
In 2019, Bellingham High School ranked 205 in Massachusetts as a result many families elect to school choice to nearby towns of Medway and Holliston or go to private and technical schools, Tri-County in Franklin, Blackstone Valley Tech in Upton, and Mount St. Charles in Woonsocket, RI. Bellingham High's sports teams have competed in the Tri-Valley League since the leagues induction in 1966. Bellingham is known for producing good baseball, softball and football teams and are not considered an easy win in other sports by the other members of the league.
