Most shrub problems are pruning problems in disguise

Looking for tree & shrub care in Bellingham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about fifteen minutes away.

Tree and shrub care is where the difference between a landscaper and a lawn crew shows up. Shearing every shrub into a ball in July or cutting spring bloomers in fall does real damage. So does ignoring the scale, winter moth and fungus that quietly kill ornamentals. That is how a mature landscape falls apart one season at a time. Bellingham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every tree & shrub care job in town.

Our program covers structural and maintenance pruning at the right time for each species, plus deep-root feeding for trees and shrubs that are struggling. It also includes monitoring and treatment for the insects and diseases common to this part of Massachusetts. We work on the plants you already have, whether that is a fifty-year-old rhododendron border or the foundation plantings that came with the house.

Why Bellingham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Tree & Shrub Care

Bellingham stretches from the North Bellingham and Caryville villages on the Charles River down to the neighborhoods off Route 126 and Route 140. Interstate 495 also runs right through the middle of town. Most of our Bellingham work is residential: split-levels and colonials from the 1960s through the 1990s, newer developments off Hartford Avenue and Lake Street, and homes around Silver Lake. We also care for commercial properties on the Route 126 retail strip that need dependable year-round care.

Bellingham soils are generally sandier and stonier than the towns east of us, with fast-draining outwash near the Charles River and its ponds and heavier till on the uplands. Fast drainage sounds like a good thing until the lawn browns out in a dry July and the mulch beds bake. So soil building, watering habits and the right plant choices matter more here than almost anywhere else we work.

Tree & Shrub Care benefits for Bellingham, MA properties

  • Shrubs bloom the way they should
  • Hedges stay full from the ground up
  • Early treatment saves plants you would otherwise lose
  • Protection for mature plantings that would cost thousands to replace
  • The whole landscape looks tended, not just trimmed

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Bellingham call us about tree & shrub care because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Hydrangeas and lilacs that never bloom because someone pruned them at the wrong time
  • Hedges thinning out at the bottom from years of shearing
  • Arborvitae browning from winter burn, bagworms or deer
  • Rhododendrons and hollies yellowing in poor soil
  • Winter moth, scale and lace bug stripping ornamentals every spring
  • Foundation shrubs that have swallowed the windows

What’s included

  • Pruning on a species-specific schedule
  • Rejuvenation pruning for overgrown shrubs
  • Deep-root fertilization for trees and shrubs
  • Insect and disease monitoring and treatment
  • Winter protection and anti-desiccant sprays where needed
  • Removal and replacement recommendations when a plant is beyond saving

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope tree & shrub care for a Bellingham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Tree & Shrub Care works in Bellingham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a tree & shrub care job runs in Bellingham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Inventory the plants

We walk the property and identify every ornamental tree and shrub, its condition and what it needs, and give you a written plan.

02

Prune on schedule

Spring bloomers after they flower, summer bloomers in late winter, hedges and evergreens in their window. No shearing everything into balls in July.

03

Feed and protect

Deep-root feeding where soil is poor, treatments timed to the pest lifecycle, and winter protection for plants that need it.

04

Monitor all season

Because our crews are on the property regularly, we spot problems early, when a small treatment fixes them.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price tree & shrub care in Bellingham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Number and size of the trees and shrubs on the property

How overgrown or neglected the plants are when we start

Which treatments the plants need and how many visits

Whether you bundle care with a maintenance program

When to schedule Tree & Shrub Care in Bellingham, MA

Pruning runs nearly year-round, but the window depends on the plant. It is late winter for most trees and summer bloomers, right after flowering for spring bloomers, and early summer for hedges. Feeding is spring and fall. Pest treatments follow the pest, not the calendar, so the earlier we see the property the better.

Signs it’s time to call

  • Shrubs that used to bloom and no longer do
  • Hedges that are dense on top and bare at the bottom
  • Browning, yellowing or thinning on evergreens
  • Foundation plantings covering windows and siding

Tree & Shrub Care questions from Bellingham, MA customers

How much does tree & shrub care cost in Bellingham, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for tree & shrub care in Bellingham, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
When should I prune my hydrangeas?
It depends on the type. Bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood and get a light clean-up after flowering. Panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so we cut them back in late winter. Pruning the wrong one at the wrong time is why so many never bloom.
Can you save an overgrown shrub?
Usually. Rejuvenation pruning over two or three seasons brings most overgrown shrubs back. We will tell you if replacement makes more sense.
Do you treat for winter moth and other pests?
Yes. We monitor for winter moth, scale, lace bug, mites and the other common pests and treat on the right timing.

More Tree & Shrub Care questions, answered

Why are my arborvitae turning brown?
Common causes are winter burn, deer browse, bagworms or root problems from wet soil. We diagnose the actual cause before treating.
Do you remove large trees?
We handle ornamental and small tree work. For large removals and climbing work, we refer you to a licensed arborist we trust.
Is deep-root feeding worth it?
For trees and shrubs in poor or compacted soil, yes. It delivers nutrients where roots can use them and is one of the best ways to bring a struggling plant back.

Bellingham history and geography

History

The area of the town south of the Charles River constituted the southwestern corner of the Dedham Grant, which sprouted much of what has become Norfolk County. The land was swampy, and the town of Dedham did not believe it worthy of settlement. The area north of the river would be purchased by Edward Rawson, and due to the settlement of borders with the surrounding communities, these two areas would eventually merge. Most of the land to be called Bellingham was originally a portion of Dedham.
The first land bought in Bellingham that was Dedham was purchased in 1696 by a man who believed that that government is best which governs least. By 1713, there were enough citizens to warrant village meetings in the area. By 1718, the village petitioned for separation, and the town officially incorporated on November 27, 1719. The village was originally named "Westham" (short for "West Dedham"), but at the time of incorporation, its name was changed to Bellingham without record of the benefactor. The town is named for Richard Bellingham, an early governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The town was founded with a Pilgrim (Congregationalist) meeting house, like all the towns in the colony at the time. However, this church would dissolve before the middle of the century, replaced with a Baptist church. John Leland, a Baptist minister, who was a major supporter of James Madison and the First Amendment to the Constitution, was baptized in Bellingham's Baptist church in 1775.

Geography and transportation

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.0 square miles (49.2 km²), of which 18.5 square miles (47.9 km²) is land and 0.5 square mile (1.3 km) (2.58%) is water. The town's mean elevation is 293 feet (89 m) above sea level.
Bellingham is located at the southwestern corner of Norfolk County, just northwest of the northeastern corner of Rhode Island. It is bordered by Medway on the north, Franklin to the east, Wrentham to the southeast; Woonsocket, Rhode Island, on the south; and Blackstone, Hopedale and Mendon to the west, and Milford to the northwest. Bellingham is 23 miles (37 km) southeast of Worcester, 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Boston, and 20 miles (30 km) north of Providence.

Education

As of 2024, there are two elementary schools (Stallbrook, and DiPietro), one middle school (Bellingham Memorial), and two high schools (Bellingham High School and Keough Memorial Academy). The Clara Macy Elementary school was closed before the start of the 2015–2016 school year and was demolished the following year. The children who attended Clara Macy school in the 2014–2015 school year were divided geographically between the remaining two elementary schools. Joseph F. DiPietro Elementary School was formally known as South Elementary school for the majority of its history.
In 2019, Bellingham High School ranked 205 in Massachusetts as a result many families elect to school choice to nearby towns of Medway and Holliston or go to private and technical schools, Tri-County in Franklin, Blackstone Valley Tech in Upton, and Mount St. Charles in Woonsocket, RI. Bellingham High's sports teams have competed in the Tri-Valley League since the leagues induction in 1966. Bellingham is known for producing good baseball, softball and football teams and are not considered an easy win in other sports by the other members of the league.
