A wall fails from behind, not from the front

Looking for retaining walls in Bellingham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about fifteen minutes away.

Retaining walls are structures, and they fail like structures: slowly, then all at once. Water building up behind a wall with no drainage is what pushes the face out, tips the top forward and eventually drops the wall into the yard. Most of the failed walls we replace had no base, no drainage, or neither. Bellingham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every retaining walls job in town.

Every wall we build starts with an excavated, compacted base below the first course. It also includes a drainage stone backfill and a perforated drain pipe behind the wall, and leans back at the correct batter into the slope. For taller walls we use geogrid reinforcement and, where required, an engineer. The face of the wall is your choice: segmental block, natural fieldstone, granite or boulders.

Why Bellingham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Retaining Walls

Bellingham stretches from the North Bellingham and Caryville villages on the Charles River down to the neighborhoods off Route 126 and Route 140. Interstate 495 also runs right through the middle of town. Most of our Bellingham work is residential: split-levels and colonials from the 1960s through the 1990s, newer developments off Hartford Avenue and Lake Street, and homes around Silver Lake. We also care for commercial properties on the Route 126 retail strip that need dependable year-round care.

Bellingham soils are generally sandier and stonier than the towns east of us, with fast-draining outwash near the Charles River and its ponds and heavier till on the uplands. Fast drainage sounds like a good thing until the lawn browns out in a dry July and the mulch beds bake. So soil building, watering habits and the right plant choices matter more here than almost anywhere else we work.

Retaining Walls benefits for Bellingham, MA properties

  • Slopes become usable patios, lawns and planting beds
  • Erosion stops and soil stays where it belongs
  • A properly drained wall stands for decades
  • Natural stone or block that improves the look of the property
  • Peace of mind that the wall is not going anywhere

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Bellingham call us about retaining walls because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A wall that is leaning, bulging or has already fallen
  • Water pushing through or over the wall after every storm
  • A steep, unusable slope that erodes into the lawn
  • Landscape timbers rotting and collapsing
  • A wall built without a base that heaves every winter
  • Not knowing if the wall needs an engineer or a permit

What’s included

  • Excavated and compacted base below the first course
  • Drainage stone backfill and perforated drain pipe
  • Correct batter and interlocking or pinned courses
  • Geogrid reinforcement on taller walls
  • Capstones or a finished top course
  • Finish grading and restoration of the surrounding lawn or beds

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope retaining walls for a Bellingham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Retaining Walls works in Bellingham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a retaining walls job runs in Bellingham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Assess the slope

We look at the height, the soil, where the water goes and what the wall has to hold. Then we tell you what type of wall makes sense and whether it needs an engineer.

02

Build the base

The wall is only as good as what is under it. We excavate below grade and compact a stone base before the first course goes down.

03

Stack with drainage

We set each course level with the correct batter, and place drainage stone and pipe behind the wall as it rises so water never builds up.

04

Cap and restore

Capstones finish the top, then we grade the backfill and restore the surrounding lawn or beds.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price retaining walls in Bellingham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Wall height and length

Material: segmental block, natural stone, granite or boulders

Excavation, drainage and geogrid the wall requires

Access for equipment and material delivery

When to schedule Retaining Walls in Bellingham, MA

We build walls from the spring thaw through early winter. Because wall projects often tie into patios, steps and grading, planning them in the off-season means we can sequence the whole project properly in spring. If a wall is actively failing, call now; a wall that has started to move rarely stops on its own.

Signs it’s time to call

  • An existing wall is leaning, cracking or bulging
  • A slope is eroding or impossible to mow
  • You want a flat, usable area where there is currently a hill
  • Timber walls are rotting and need replacement

Retaining Walls questions from Bellingham, MA customers

How much do retaining walls cost in Bellingham, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for retaining walls in Bellingham, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Does my wall need a permit or an engineer?
Walls above about four feet, or walls holding a surcharge such as a driveway, often require engineering and a permit. We check the local requirements and handle it.
Block or natural stone?
Segmental block gives you a uniform, cost-effective wall engineered for the job. Natural stone and boulder walls have a timeless look and cost more in labor. Both get the same base and drainage.
Why did my old wall fail?
Almost always water and no drainage, a missing base, or no batter. Sometimes all three.

Can you repair a leaning wall?
A wall that has started to lean usually needs to be rebuilt. We will tell you honestly if a repair is worth it.
How high can you build a wall?
As high as the site requires with proper engineering, but terracing two shorter walls is often a better-looking and more affordable solution.
Will the wall drain properly?
Yes. Every wall gets drainage stone backfill and a perforated pipe to daylight, so water never builds up behind it.

Bellingham history and geography

History

The area of the town south of the Charles River constituted the southwestern corner of the Dedham Grant, which sprouted much of what has become Norfolk County. The land was swampy, and the town of Dedham did not believe it worthy of settlement. The area north of the river would be purchased by Edward Rawson, and due to the settlement of borders with the surrounding communities, these two areas would eventually merge. Most of the land to be called Bellingham was originally a portion of Dedham.
The first land bought in Bellingham that was Dedham was purchased in 1696 by a man who believed that that government is best which governs least. By 1713, there were enough citizens to warrant village meetings in the area. By 1718, the village petitioned for separation, and the town officially incorporated on November 27, 1719. The village was originally named "Westham" (short for "West Dedham"), but at the time of incorporation, its name was changed to Bellingham without record of the benefactor. The town is named for Richard Bellingham, an early governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The town was founded with a Pilgrim (Congregationalist) meeting house, like all the towns in the colony at the time. However, this church would dissolve before the middle of the century, replaced with a Baptist church. John Leland, a Baptist minister, who was a major supporter of James Madison and the First Amendment to the Constitution, was baptized in Bellingham's Baptist church in 1775.

Geography and transportation

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.0 square miles (49.2 km²), of which 18.5 square miles (47.9 km²) is land and 0.5 square mile (1.3 km) (2.58%) is water. The town's mean elevation is 293 feet (89 m) above sea level.
Bellingham is located at the southwestern corner of Norfolk County, just northwest of the northeastern corner of Rhode Island. It is bordered by Medway on the north, Franklin to the east, Wrentham to the southeast; Woonsocket, Rhode Island, on the south; and Blackstone, Hopedale and Mendon to the west, and Milford to the northwest. Bellingham is 23 miles (37 km) southeast of Worcester, 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Boston, and 20 miles (30 km) north of Providence.

Education

As of 2024, there are two elementary schools (Stallbrook, and DiPietro), one middle school (Bellingham Memorial), and two high schools (Bellingham High School and Keough Memorial Academy). The Clara Macy Elementary school was closed before the start of the 2015–2016 school year and was demolished the following year. The children who attended Clara Macy school in the 2014–2015 school year were divided geographically between the remaining two elementary schools. Joseph F. DiPietro Elementary School was formally known as South Elementary school for the majority of its history.
In 2019, Bellingham High School ranked 205 in Massachusetts as a result many families elect to school choice to nearby towns of Medway and Holliston or go to private and technical schools, Tri-County in Franklin, Blackstone Valley Tech in Upton, and Mount St. Charles in Woonsocket, RI. Bellingham High's sports teams have competed in the Tri-Valley League since the leagues induction in 1966. Bellingham is known for producing good baseball, softball and football teams and are not considered an easy win in other sports by the other members of the league.
