A firepit is the reason people actually use the back yard

Looking for outdoor firepits & seating areas in Bellingham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about fifteen minutes away.

Outdoor firepits and seating areas are the difference between a patio you look at and a patio you live on. A well-built firepit adds an evening to every day from April through November and turns a back yard into the place friends want to be. Bellingham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every outdoor firepits & seating areas job in town.

We build the whole space, not just the ring. That means a compacted base and patio surface, then a firepit built from fire-rated block or natural stone with a steel insert. Finally, we add seating walls or a built-in bench at the right height and distance. Wood-burning or gas, round or square, matched to your patio and your property, with clearances that keep it safe.

Why Bellingham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Outdoor Firepits & Seating Areas

Bellingham stretches from the North Bellingham and Caryville villages on the Charles River down to the neighborhoods off Route 126 and Route 140. Interstate 495 also runs right through the middle of town. Most of our Bellingham work is residential: split-levels and colonials from the 1960s through the 1990s, newer developments off Hartford Avenue and Lake Street, and homes around Silver Lake. We also care for commercial properties on the Route 126 retail strip that need dependable year-round care.

Bellingham soils are generally sandier and stonier than the towns east of us, with fast-draining outwash near the Charles River and its ponds and heavier till on the uplands. Fast drainage sounds like a good thing until the lawn browns out in a dry July and the mulch beds bake. So soil building, watering habits and the right plant choices matter more here than almost anywhere else we work.

Outdoor Firepits & Seating Areas benefits for Bellingham, MA properties

  • Two more months of outdoor living at each end of the season
  • A gathering place that pulls everyone outside
  • Built-in seating you never have to drag out or put away
  • A fire feature that will not rust, sink or crack
  • A finished look that adds real value to the property

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Bellingham call us about outdoor firepits & seating areas because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A store-bought ring rusting on the lawn and killing the grass
  • A firepit too close to the house, deck or trees
  • Seating that is the wrong height or too far from the fire
  • Smoke that follows everyone around because the layout ignores the prevailing wind
  • A firepit built on soil that has already started to sink
  • A patio with no focal point that nobody uses after dinner

What’s included

  • Compacted base and patio surface around the fire feature
  • Firepit built from fire-rated block or natural stone
  • Steel insert or gas burner kit and igniter
  • Seating walls or built-in benches with capstones
  • Proper clearances from structures and plantings
  • Optional lighting and gas line coordination

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope outdoor firepits & seating areas for a Bellingham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Outdoor Firepits & Seating Areas works in Bellingham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a outdoor firepits & seating areas job runs in Bellingham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Choose the spot

We look at the view, the wind, the distance from the house and the trees, and place the firepit where you will actually use it.

02

Build the base

A firepit is a hardscape structure; it gets the same compacted stone base as a patio so it never sinks or tilts.

03

Build the fire feature

Fire-rated block or natural stone, a steel insert or gas burner, and a cap that is comfortable to set a drink on.

04

Add the seating

Seating walls or benches at the right height and distance, capped and finished to match the patio.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price outdoor firepits & seating areas in Bellingham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Wood-burning or gas, and the burner or insert chosen

Size of the firepit and the seating walls

Patio square footage around the feature

Gas line, electrical and lighting if included

When to schedule Outdoor Firepits & Seating Areas in Bellingham, MA

We build fire features spring through early winter along with patios and walls, and a firepit finished in October sees use through the holidays. Many customers add a firepit to an existing patio in a few days; new patio and firepit projects book best when planned a season ahead.

Signs it’s time to call

  • You have a patio nobody uses after dinner
  • A portable firepit is scorching the lawn
  • You want to use the yard in April and October, not just July
  • You are planning a patio and want it to have a reason to exist

Outdoor Firepits & Seating Areas questions from Bellingham, MA customers

How much do outdoor firepits & seating areas cost in Bellingham, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for outdoor firepits & seating areas in Bellingham, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Wood-burning or gas?
Wood gives the real crackle and smell and costs less to build. Gas lights instantly, produces no smoke and needs a gas line. We build both and will walk you through the trade-offs.
How far from the house should a firepit be?
Generally at least ten feet from any structure, and clear of overhanging branches. We follow local requirements and place it where it is safe and usable.
Can you add a firepit to my existing patio?
Yes, if the base under the patio is sound. If not, we rebuild that section so the fire feature does not sink.

More Outdoor Firepits & Seating Areas questions, answered

What size should the seating area be?
Large enough for the group you actually host. A ten to twelve foot circle seats six to eight people comfortably around a standard firepit.
Do you build seating walls or just the pit?
Both. Seating walls, built-in benches and matching capstones are part of most firepit projects.
Is a permit required?
Requirements vary by town, especially for gas. We check and handle whatever the town requires.

Bellingham history and geography

History

The area of the town south of the Charles River constituted the southwestern corner of the Dedham Grant, which sprouted much of what has become Norfolk County. The land was swampy, and the town of Dedham did not believe it worthy of settlement. The area north of the river would be purchased by Edward Rawson, and due to the settlement of borders with the surrounding communities, these two areas would eventually merge. Most of the land to be called Bellingham was originally a portion of Dedham.
The first land bought in Bellingham that was Dedham was purchased in 1696 by a man who believed that that government is best which governs least. By 1713, there were enough citizens to warrant village meetings in the area. By 1718, the village petitioned for separation, and the town officially incorporated on November 27, 1719. The village was originally named "Westham" (short for "West Dedham"), but at the time of incorporation, its name was changed to Bellingham without record of the benefactor. The town is named for Richard Bellingham, an early governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The town was founded with a Pilgrim (Congregationalist) meeting house, like all the towns in the colony at the time. However, this church would dissolve before the middle of the century, replaced with a Baptist church. John Leland, a Baptist minister, who was a major supporter of James Madison and the First Amendment to the Constitution, was baptized in Bellingham's Baptist church in 1775.

Geography and transportation

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.0 square miles (49.2 km²), of which 18.5 square miles (47.9 km²) is land and 0.5 square mile (1.3 km) (2.58%) is water. The town's mean elevation is 293 feet (89 m) above sea level.
Bellingham is located at the southwestern corner of Norfolk County, just northwest of the northeastern corner of Rhode Island. It is bordered by Medway on the north, Franklin to the east, Wrentham to the southeast; Woonsocket, Rhode Island, on the south; and Blackstone, Hopedale and Mendon to the west, and Milford to the northwest. Bellingham is 23 miles (37 km) southeast of Worcester, 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Boston, and 20 miles (30 km) north of Providence.

Education

As of 2024, there are two elementary schools (Stallbrook, and DiPietro), one middle school (Bellingham Memorial), and two high schools (Bellingham High School and Keough Memorial Academy). The Clara Macy Elementary school was closed before the start of the 2015–2016 school year and was demolished the following year. The children who attended Clara Macy school in the 2014–2015 school year were divided geographically between the remaining two elementary schools. Joseph F. DiPietro Elementary School was formally known as South Elementary school for the majority of its history.
In 2019, Bellingham High School ranked 205 in Massachusetts as a result many families elect to school choice to nearby towns of Medway and Holliston or go to private and technical schools, Tri-County in Franklin, Blackstone Valley Tech in Upton, and Mount St. Charles in Woonsocket, RI. Bellingham High's sports teams have competed in the Tri-Valley League since the leagues induction in 1966. Bellingham is known for producing good baseball, softball and football teams and are not considered an easy win in other sports by the other members of the league.
