Uneven steps are a hazard, and a sign the base is gone

Looking for steps & stairways in Bellingham, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about fifteen minutes away.

Steps and stairways carry more weight, more traffic and more liability than any other hardscape on a property. People get hurt on a step that has settled an inch, or a riser that is taller than the others. They also get hurt on a tread that pitches toward the house and freezes into an ice sheet. Bellingham homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every steps & stairways job in town.

We build steps on the same principle as everything else: a compacted crushed-stone base, proper footing, and materials set level with a slight forward pitch so water drains off. Riser heights are consistent from top to bottom, and treads are deep enough to be comfortable. The steps also tie into the walkway, patio or wall they connect to, so nothing moves independently.

Why Bellingham, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Steps & Stairways

Bellingham stretches from the North Bellingham and Caryville villages on the Charles River down to the neighborhoods off Route 126 and Route 140. Interstate 495 also runs right through the middle of town. Most of our Bellingham work is residential: split-levels and colonials from the 1960s through the 1990s, newer developments off Hartford Avenue and Lake Street, and homes around Silver Lake. We also care for commercial properties on the Route 126 retail strip that need dependable year-round care.

Bellingham soils are generally sandier and stonier than the towns east of us, with fast-draining outwash near the Charles River and its ponds and heavier till on the uplands. Fast drainage sounds like a good thing until the lawn browns out in a dry July and the mulch beds bake. So soil building, watering habits and the right plant choices matter more here than almost anywhere else we work.

Steps & Stairways benefits for Bellingham, MA properties

  • Safe, even steps that feel solid underfoot
  • No more ice sheets on the treads
  • Steps that stay level through freeze and thaw
  • A front entry that makes the whole house look cared for
  • Slopes that are finally easy to move through

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Bellingham call us about steps & stairways because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Front steps that have sunk, tilted or pulled away from the house
  • Risers of different heights that trip people
  • Treads that hold water and freeze
  • Timber or railroad-tie steps rotting and collapsing
  • A steep slope with no safe way down
  • Loose stone steps that rock underfoot

What’s included

  • Excavation and compacted stone base or footing
  • Granite, bluestone, natural stone or block steps
  • Consistent riser heights and comfortable tread depth
  • Slight pitch on every tread for drainage
  • Tie-in to walkways, patios, walls and landings
  • Optional railings, lighting and landing pads

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope steps & stairways for a Bellingham property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Steps & Stairways works in Bellingham, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a steps & stairways job runs in Bellingham, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Measure the rise and run

We measure the total rise and available run so every riser is the same height and every tread is deep enough to be comfortable and safe.

02

Build the base

Steps get a compacted base or a footing below the frost line, because a step that moves is a step that hurts someone.

03

Set the steps

We set granite treads, bluestone on block, or full segmental block steps level with a forward pitch and tie them into the adjoining hardscape.

04

Finish the approach

We finish the landings, walkway connections, railings and lighting so the whole path is safe from the driveway to the door.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price steps & stairways in Bellingham, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Number of steps and the total rise

Material: granite, bluestone, natural stone or block

Excavation, footing and base the site requires

Railings, lighting and landings added

When to schedule Steps & Stairways in Bellingham, MA

Step and stairway work runs spring through early winter. Front entry steps often take just a few days to replace. Stairways through a slope are usually part of a wall or patio project, so they book best when planned a season ahead. If steps are actively unsafe, call now; we prioritize hazards.

Signs it’s time to call

  • Steps have settled, tilted or separated from the house
  • Someone has already tripped or slipped
  • Treads hold water or ice in winter
  • Timber steps are rotting or loose

Steps & Stairways questions from Bellingham, MA customers

How much do steps & stairways cost in Bellingham, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for steps & stairways in Bellingham, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Granite, bluestone or block?
Solid granite treads are the most durable and classic. Bluestone treads on a block riser are elegant and cost less. Full block steps match a block patio or wall. All of them sit on the same base.
Why do my old steps keep sinking?
No base, or a base that holds water. Steps are heavy and need a compacted stone base or a frost-depth footing.
Can you replace just the front steps?
Yes. Entry step replacement is one of our most common projects and usually takes a few days.

More Steps & Stairways questions, answered

Do you install railings?
We coordinate railings with a fabricator and install them as part of the project when needed.
How tall should each riser be?
Six to seven inches is comfortable and safe outdoors. The most important thing is that every riser is the same height.
Can you build steps into a hill?
Yes. Stairways through slopes, often with a wall on one or both sides, are exactly the kind of project we build.

Bellingham history and geography

History

The area of the town south of the Charles River constituted the southwestern corner of the Dedham Grant, which sprouted much of what has become Norfolk County. The land was swampy, and the town of Dedham did not believe it worthy of settlement. The area north of the river would be purchased by Edward Rawson, and due to the settlement of borders with the surrounding communities, these two areas would eventually merge. Most of the land to be called Bellingham was originally a portion of Dedham.
The first land bought in Bellingham that was Dedham was purchased in 1696 by a man who believed that that government is best which governs least. By 1713, there were enough citizens to warrant village meetings in the area. By 1718, the village petitioned for separation, and the town officially incorporated on November 27, 1719. The village was originally named "Westham" (short for "West Dedham"), but at the time of incorporation, its name was changed to Bellingham without record of the benefactor. The town is named for Richard Bellingham, an early governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
The town was founded with a Pilgrim (Congregationalist) meeting house, like all the towns in the colony at the time. However, this church would dissolve before the middle of the century, replaced with a Baptist church. John Leland, a Baptist minister, who was a major supporter of James Madison and the First Amendment to the Constitution, was baptized in Bellingham's Baptist church in 1775.

Geography and transportation

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.0 square miles (49.2 km²), of which 18.5 square miles (47.9 km²) is land and 0.5 square mile (1.3 km) (2.58%) is water. The town's mean elevation is 293 feet (89 m) above sea level.
Bellingham is located at the southwestern corner of Norfolk County, just northwest of the northeastern corner of Rhode Island. It is bordered by Medway on the north, Franklin to the east, Wrentham to the southeast; Woonsocket, Rhode Island, on the south; and Blackstone, Hopedale and Mendon to the west, and Milford to the northwest. Bellingham is 23 miles (37 km) southeast of Worcester, 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Boston, and 20 miles (30 km) north of Providence.

Education

As of 2024, there are two elementary schools (Stallbrook, and DiPietro), one middle school (Bellingham Memorial), and two high schools (Bellingham High School and Keough Memorial Academy). The Clara Macy Elementary school was closed before the start of the 2015–2016 school year and was demolished the following year. The children who attended Clara Macy school in the 2014–2015 school year were divided geographically between the remaining two elementary schools. Joseph F. DiPietro Elementary School was formally known as South Elementary school for the majority of its history.
In 2019, Bellingham High School ranked 205 in Massachusetts as a result many families elect to school choice to nearby towns of Medway and Holliston or go to private and technical schools, Tri-County in Franklin, Blackstone Valley Tech in Upton, and Mount St. Charles in Woonsocket, RI. Bellingham High's sports teams have competed in the Tri-Valley League since the leagues induction in 1966. Bellingham is known for producing good baseball, softball and football teams and are not considered an easy win in other sports by the other members of the league.
