If the lawn feels spongy, thatch is the problem

Looking for dethatching in Medway, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Dethatching is the lawn service people do not know they need until they see the pile. A thick thatch layer makes a lawn feel spongy, sheds water, shelters grubs and fungus and blocks fertilizer, so the more you feed and water, the worse it looks. Medway homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every dethatching job in town.

We check the thatch depth first, because a thin layer is healthy and deserves to stay put. When it is over half an inch, we power rake the lawn to pull the dead material out and remove it. Then we follow with overseeding and a feeding, so the lawn fills back in thicker than before. Combined with core aeration, it is the reset an old, tired lawn needs.

Why Medway, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Dethatching

Medway is a family-oriented town on the Charles River, north of Franklin. Its neighborhoods range from the historic homes of Medway Village along Village Street to ranch and colonial subdivisions off Route 109, Holliston Street and Winthrop Street. Lots here tend to be flatter and more open than in the ledge-heavy towns to the south, and many homeowners have real yards to work with. That makes Medway a great place for patios, lawns and plantings done right the first time.

The Charles River and Chicken Brook shape the ground in Medway. Soil near the river is sandy and drains fast, while the inland neighborhoods often sit on compacted till or old farmland with a hard layer under the topsoil. Both create lawn and drainage problems that look identical on the surface and need completely different fixes. That is why we check the soil and watch how water moves across the property before we recommend anything.

Dethatching benefits for Medway, MA properties

  • Water, air and fertilizer reach the roots again
  • Fewer grubs, fungus and disease problems
  • A thicker, greener lawn after overseeding
  • Better results from every other lawn treatment
  • A lawn that responds instead of just surviving

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Medway call us about dethatching because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A lawn that feels spongy and springy underfoot
  • Water running off instead of soaking in
  • Fertilizer that does not seem to do anything
  • Brown patches, fungus and grub damage every year
  • A lawn with years of mowing and feeding behind it that never improved
  • Dead material choking out new growth

What’s included

  • Thatch depth check and honest recommendation
  • Power raking across the lawn
  • Removal and haul-away of thatch
  • Overseeding to fill in thinned areas
  • Feeding to speed recovery
  • Optional core aeration for compacted soil

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope dethatching for a Medway property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Dethatching works in Medway, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a dethatching job runs in Medway, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Check the thatch

We measure the layer. Under half an inch is normal and we will tell you so. Over that, dethatching pays off.

02

Power rake

A dethatching machine pulls the dead material up from the base of the grass across the whole lawn.

03

Remove it

We rake, collect and haul away the thatch, which is often a surprising amount of material.

04

Seed and feed

Overseeding and a feeding help the lawn recover quickly and fill in thicker.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price dethatching in Medway, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Lawn square footage

Thatch thickness and how much material we have to remove

Overseeding and fertilizer added

Combining with core aeration

When to schedule Dethatching in Medway, MA

Early fall is the best time for cool-season lawns, when the grass is growing strongly and can recover fast, with late spring as a second option. We avoid dethatching in summer heat or when the lawn is under stress. Pair it with fall aeration and overseeding for the biggest improvement.

Signs it’s time to call

  • The lawn feels spongy when you walk on it
  • Water beads and runs off the surface
  • Grass is thin and brown despite feeding and watering
  • You can see a thick layer of dead material at the base of the grass

Dethatching questions from Medway, MA customers

How much does dethatching cost in Medway, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for dethatching in Medway, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
What is thatch?
A layer of dead stems, roots and debris between the grass and the soil. A thin layer is healthy; a thick one suffocates the lawn.
How do I know if my lawn needs dethatching?
If it feels spongy, sheds water or has more than half an inch of dead material at the base of the grass, it needs it. We check and tell you honestly.
Is dethatching the same as aeration?
No. Dethatching removes the dead layer on top; aeration relieves compaction in the soil. Many lawns need both, and they work well together.

More Dethatching questions, answered

When is the best time?
Early fall, when the lawn is growing strongly and can recover. Late spring is the second-best window.
Will the lawn look worse afterward?
For a couple of weeks, yes; dethatching is aggressive. With overseeding and feeding it comes back thicker within a month.
How often should I dethatch?
Only when thatch builds up, typically every few years. Regular aeration and proper mowing slow the buildup.

Medway history and geography

History

Medway was first settled in 1657 and was officially incorporated in 1713. At that time, Medway began as a farming community of two hundred thirty-three. It was not long before the water power of the Charles River and Chicken Brook stimulated the formation of cotton and paper mills, straw and boot factories, and a variety of cottage industries. Medway demonstrates the central importance of the Charles River and the thriving town that grew alongside it. Today, the one-room schoolhouses are gone and the country stores have moved to the mall, but the open town meetings continue.
After nearby Medfield was established as a town in 1651, an increasing number of newcomers settled on the land west of the Charles River. By 1712, this settlement west of the Charles had grown large enough to petition the Massachusetts General Court for the creation of a separate new town. That petition was granted, and the town of Medway incorporated on October 25, 1713. At its founding by Henry Garnsey, and for 170 years afterward, the town of Medway included the land that is now Millis. Eventually, the eastern section of the town, known as East Medway, separated in 1885 to form the town of Millis, and Medway assumed the shape it has today.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.5 square miles (30 km²), of which 11.4 square miles (30 km²) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km²) (0.78%) is water. Medway is the geographical center between Boston, Worcester, and Providence, which is purported by some to explain the origin of the name. However, like many New England cities and towns, it most likely derived its name from an English location, in this case, the region of Medway, England, or the River Medway. Likely both its geographical location and a nod to old England compelled the choice of town name.

Transportation

Both Route 109 and Route 126 pass through the town and serve as some of the main roads in the town. Interstate 495 shortly passes through the southwest corner of the town, but does not provide any exits. The closest exits are in nearby Bellingham and Milford.
The closest MBTA Commuter Rail service is at Forge Park/495, Franklin, and Norfolk stations on the Franklin/Foxboro Line. Until 1966, the Millis Branch served stations at Medway and West Medway.
