Good landscape construction starts below the surface

Looking for landscape construction in Medway, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Landscape construction is the work that changes what a property is, not just how it looks this season. A back yard that becomes a patio, an outdoor kitchen and a fire feature. A sloped lot that becomes usable with walls and steps. A wet yard that finally drains. It is also the work where mistakes are most expensive, because they sit underground where nobody sees them. Medway homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every landscape construction job in town.

We build in the right order: drainage and grading first, then base and structure, then surface and plantings. We build every base from compacted stone at the depth this climate demands, drain every wall, and set every grade to move water away from the house. Because the same crew handles every phase, nobody tears anything up twice and nobody blames another contractor.

Why Medway, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Landscape Construction

Medway is a family-oriented town on the Charles River, north of Franklin. Its neighborhoods range from the historic homes of Medway Village along Village Street to ranch and colonial subdivisions off Route 109, Holliston Street and Winthrop Street. Lots here tend to be flatter and more open than in the ledge-heavy towns to the south, and many homeowners have real yards to work with. That makes Medway a great place for patios, lawns and plantings done right the first time.

The Charles River and Chicken Brook shape the ground in Medway. Soil near the river is sandy and drains fast, while the inland neighborhoods often sit on compacted till or old farmland with a hard layer under the topsoil. Both create lawn and drainage problems that look identical on the surface and need completely different fixes. That is why we check the soil and watch how water moves across the property before we recommend anything.

Landscape Construction benefits for Medway, MA properties

  • A yard that functions as well as it looks
  • Hardscape built to survive decades of freeze and thaw
  • Drainage solved as part of the project instead of after
  • One accountable crew from excavation to plantings
  • A written scope that keeps the price honest

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Medway call us about landscape construction because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • A patio, wall or walkway that heaved or sank within a few winters
  • Multiple contractors blaming each other while the project stalls
  • A yard that stays wet no matter what you plant
  • Slopes, ledge and drainage problems nobody planned for
  • Change orders that doubled the price mid-project
  • A beautiful design that cannot survive New England frost

What’s included

  • Site assessment, grading and drainage design
  • Excavation and compacted stone base construction
  • Paver, bluestone and natural stone hardscape
  • Retaining walls, steps and seating walls
  • Outdoor kitchens and fire features
  • Lawn installation, planting and finish grading

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope landscape construction for a Medway property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Landscape Construction works in Medway, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a landscape construction job runs in Medway, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Seth walks the property with you, listens to what you want, and flags what the site is going to require: ledge, drainage, access, grade.

02

Plan and price

You get a written scope with the whole project sequenced and priced, so you know what the price covers before we dig.

03

Build in order

Drainage and grading, then base and structure, then surfaces and plantings. Our own crew, our own equipment, owner on site.

04

Finish and walk through

Final grading, clean-up and a walkthrough together. If something is not right, we fix it before we leave.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price landscape construction in Medway, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Size and scope of the project and the materials chosen

Excavation, ledge removal and how much base and drainage the site needs

Access for equipment and material delivery

Phasing, permits and any engineering required

When to schedule Landscape Construction in Medway, MA

Construction runs from the spring thaw into December in most years. Spring and early fall book first, so projects planned over the winter get the best scheduling. We can phase larger projects across seasons so the budget and the calendar both work.

Signs it’s time to call

  • You want the back yard to be a place you actually use
  • Existing hardscape has failed and needs to be rebuilt right
  • The property has slopes, ledge or water problems that limit what you can do
  • You want one crew to handle the whole project start to finish

Medway history and geography

History

Medway was first settled in 1657 and was officially incorporated in 1713. At that time, Medway began as a farming community of two hundred thirty-three. It was not long before the water power of the Charles River and Chicken Brook stimulated the formation of cotton and paper mills, straw and boot factories, and a variety of cottage industries. Medway demonstrates the central importance of the Charles River and the thriving town that grew alongside it. Today, the one-room schoolhouses are gone and the country stores have moved to the mall, but the open town meetings continue.
After nearby Medfield was established as a town in 1651, an increasing number of newcomers settled on the land west of the Charles River. By 1712, this settlement west of the Charles had grown large enough to petition the Massachusetts General Court for the creation of a separate new town. That petition was granted, and the town of Medway incorporated on October 25, 1713. At its founding by Henry Garnsey, and for 170 years afterward, the town of Medway included the land that is now Millis. Eventually, the eastern section of the town, known as East Medway, separated in 1885 to form the town of Millis, and Medway assumed the shape it has today.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.5 square miles (30 km²), of which 11.4 square miles (30 km²) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km²) (0.78%) is water. Medway is the geographical center between Boston, Worcester, and Providence, which is purported by some to explain the origin of the name. However, like many New England cities and towns, it most likely derived its name from an English location, in this case, the region of Medway, England, or the River Medway. Likely both its geographical location and a nod to old England compelled the choice of town name.

Transportation

Both Route 109 and Route 126 pass through the town and serve as some of the main roads in the town. Interstate 495 shortly passes through the southwest corner of the town, but does not provide any exits. The closest exits are in nearby Bellingham and Milford.
The closest MBTA Commuter Rail service is at Forge Park/495, Franklin, and Norfolk stations on the Franklin/Foxboro Line. Until 1966, the Millis Branch served stations at Medway and West Medway.
