Mulch is the cheapest thing that makes a property look finished, if you do it right

Looking for mulch & edging in Medway, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Mulch and edging is the fastest visible upgrade a property can get, and also the job most often done wrong. Mulch dumped on top of weeds, piled against tree trunks and shrub stems, or spread so deep it suffocates the roots costs money now and creates problems later. Medway homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every mulch & edging job in town.

Our crew cuts a clean, deep edge on every bed first and pulls or treats the weeds. Then we spread mulch at the right depth for the material, tapering it away from every stem and trunk. The result is a bed that holds moisture, blocks weeds and frames the plants instead of burying them, with an edge that stays crisp until the next visit.

Why Medway, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Mulch & Edging

Medway is a family-oriented town on the Charles River, north of Franklin. Its neighborhoods range from the historic homes of Medway Village along Village Street to ranch and colonial subdivisions off Route 109, Holliston Street and Winthrop Street. Lots here tend to be flatter and more open than in the ledge-heavy towns to the south, and many homeowners have real yards to work with. That makes Medway a great place for patios, lawns and plantings done right the first time.

The Charles River and Chicken Brook shape the ground in Medway. Soil near the river is sandy and drains fast, while the inland neighborhoods often sit on compacted till or old farmland with a hard layer under the topsoil. Both create lawn and drainage problems that look identical on the surface and need completely different fixes. That is why we check the soil and watch how water moves across the property before we recommend anything.

Mulch & Edging benefits for Medway, MA properties

  • Beds look defined and finished from the street
  • Mulch holds soil moisture and keeps roots cooler in summer
  • Mulch suppresses weeds instead of feeding them
  • Plants stay healthier with mulch kept off the stems
  • Crisp edges make every other part of the yard look sharper

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Medway call us about mulch & edging because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Mulch volcanoes piled against trees, rotting the bark
  • Weeds mulched over instead of pulled, so they push through in weeks
  • Bed edges that disappear into the lawn by June
  • Cheap dyed mulch that fades and floats away in the first storm
  • Mulch spread so deep the roots cannot breathe
  • Beds that look good for two weeks and neglected for the rest of the year

What’s included

  • Re-cutting every bed edge with a clean, deep line
  • Weeding and pre-treating the beds before mulch goes down
  • Quality mulch spread at the correct depth
  • Mulch kept away from stems, trunks and siding
  • Clean-up of all lawn and hardscape surfaces afterward
  • Optional mid-season touch-up and re-edge

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope mulch & edging for a Medway property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Mulch & Edging works in Medway, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a mulch & edging job runs in Medway, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Measure the beds

We measure every bed so the mulch quantity is right and the price is exact, not a guess that leaves you short or overcharged.

02

Edge and weed

We cut a clean, deep edge on every bed, pull or treat the weeds, and rake any tired mulch to break the crust.

03

Spread at the right depth

Two to three inches of fresh mulch, tapered away from every stem and trunk so plants stay healthy.

04

Clean up

We blow the lawn, walks and driveway clean, so the only thing left behind is a finished bed.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price mulch & edging in Medway, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Total bed square footage and mulch depth needed

Mulch type: natural hemlock, pine, black or brown

How much edging and weeding the beds need first

Access for wheelbarrows or a machine to move material

When to schedule Mulch & Edging in Medway, MA

Most mulch goes down between mid-April and early June, once the beds are clean and the soil has warmed. A second, lighter application in early fall keeps beds looking sharp through the holidays. We book spring mulch weeks in advance, so get on the list early.

Signs it’s time to call

  • The mulch has faded to gray and the beds look tired
  • Weeds are winning in the beds
  • Bed edges have blurred into the lawn
  • You are planning a party, a listing or a season of curb appeal

Mulch & Edging questions from Medway, MA customers

How much does mulch & edging cost in Medway, MA?
It depends on the size of the property, site access and the materials involved, as well as the season. Estimates for mulch & edging in Medway, MA are free and in writing. Seth also walks the property with you first, so the number reflects the real job, not a guess.
Which mulch should I choose?
Natural hemlock and pine bark hold color and break down into good soil. Black and brown mulch give a uniform look. We will tell you honestly what suits your beds and budget.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is right for most beds. Deeper than that smothers roots and invites pests.
Do you remove the old mulch?
Usually no. We rake the old layer to break the crust and top-dress over it. If the old mulch is more than four inches deep, we remove some.

More Mulch & Edging questions, answered

Will mulch stop the weeds?
It suppresses them, especially when we weed the beds first. Nothing stops weeds forever, which is why our maintenance program includes bed care between mulchings.
Can you mulch around a septic system or leach field?
Yes, with light equipment and no heavy loads over the field. We plan the route before we start.
How often do beds need fresh mulch?
Once a year in spring for most properties, with an optional light fall refresh. Well-maintained beds need less each year.

Medway history and geography

History

Medway was first settled in 1657 and was officially incorporated in 1713. At that time, Medway began as a farming community of two hundred thirty-three. It was not long before the water power of the Charles River and Chicken Brook stimulated the formation of cotton and paper mills, straw and boot factories, and a variety of cottage industries. Medway demonstrates the central importance of the Charles River and the thriving town that grew alongside it. Today, the one-room schoolhouses are gone and the country stores have moved to the mall, but the open town meetings continue.
After nearby Medfield was established as a town in 1651, an increasing number of newcomers settled on the land west of the Charles River. By 1712, this settlement west of the Charles had grown large enough to petition the Massachusetts General Court for the creation of a separate new town. That petition was granted, and the town of Medway incorporated on October 25, 1713. At its founding by Henry Garnsey, and for 170 years afterward, the town of Medway included the land that is now Millis. Eventually, the eastern section of the town, known as East Medway, separated in 1885 to form the town of Millis, and Medway assumed the shape it has today.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.5 square miles (30 km²), of which 11.4 square miles (30 km²) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km²) (0.78%) is water. Medway is the geographical center between Boston, Worcester, and Providence, which is purported by some to explain the origin of the name. However, like many New England cities and towns, it most likely derived its name from an English location, in this case, the region of Medway, England, or the River Medway. Likely both its geographical location and a nod to old England compelled the choice of town name.

Transportation

Both Route 109 and Route 126 pass through the town and serve as some of the main roads in the town. Interstate 495 shortly passes through the southwest corner of the town, but does not provide any exits. The closest exits are in nearby Bellingham and Milford.
The closest MBTA Commuter Rail service is at Forge Park/495, Franklin, and Norfolk stations on the Franklin/Foxboro Line. Until 1966, the Millis Branch served stations at Medway and West Medway.
