Plants die from the wrong spot and the wrong hole, not bad luck

Looking for planting in Medway, MA? Ten Four Landscape & Construction has handled it for homeowners, business owners and property managers across Norfolk County since 2012. Our Wrentham yard is also about twenty minutes away.

Planting is where a landscape gets its character, and where people make the most common mistakes. The wrong plant in the wrong spot, a hole dug too deep or too narrow, a root ball left bound, and mulch piled against the trunk all kill plants. They do it slowly, over two or three years, long after the receipt is gone. Medway homeowners have relied on us as their local landscaper for years. So we bring that same approach to every planting job in town.

We start with the site: how much sun each bed gets, how wet the soil stays, how much deer and winter wind it faces. Then we choose plants that will actually thrive there, install them at the correct depth in amended soil with the roots loosened, water them in and mulch them properly. We are not tied to one nursery, so you get the right plant, not the one on sale that week.

Why Medway, MA homeowners call Ten Four for Planting

Medway is a family-oriented town on the Charles River, north of Franklin. Its neighborhoods range from the historic homes of Medway Village along Village Street to ranch and colonial subdivisions off Route 109, Holliston Street and Winthrop Street. Lots here tend to be flatter and more open than in the ledge-heavy towns to the south, and many homeowners have real yards to work with. That makes Medway a great place for patios, lawns and plantings done right the first time.

The Charles River and Chicken Brook shape the ground in Medway. Soil near the river is sandy and drains fast, while the inland neighborhoods often sit on compacted till or old farmland with a hard layer under the topsoil. Both create lawn and drainage problems that look identical on the surface and need completely different fixes. That is why we check the soil and watch how water moves across the property before we recommend anything.

Planting benefits for Medway, MA properties

  • Plants that thrive because they belong where we put them
  • A landscape that looks intentional, not accidental
  • Privacy, shade and seasonal color that improve every year
  • Less replacement, less watering and less frustration
  • Curb appeal that adds value to the property

Problems we fix most often

Most people in Medway call us about planting because something has already gone wrong. Others, meanwhile, want to make sure it never does. In short, these are the issues we see most often. Every one of them is also preventable when we do the work right the first time:

  • Foundation shrubs that outgrew the space and cover the windows
  • Plants dying one by one because the spot is too wet, too dry or too shady
  • Deer eating everything the day after it goes in
  • A privacy screen that never went in, so the neighbors are still right there
  • Bare beds with mulch but no plants
  • Trees planted too deep and slowly declining

What’s included

  • Site assessment for sun, soil, moisture and deer
  • Plant selection and a written planting plan
  • Bed preparation and soil amendment
  • Correct planting depth with roots loosened
  • Watering in and mulching at the right depth
  • Establishment guidance and a plant guarantee

Above all, every one of those items is part of the price we quote, not an upsell. When we scope planting for a Medway property, we spell out exactly what you get. So there are no surprises on the invoice, and no corners cut where you cannot see them.

How Planting works in Medway, MA

We keep the process simple and predictable so you always know what is happening and what comes next. Here is how a planting job runs in Medway, MA with Ten Four, from the first call to the final walkthrough. The owner is also reachable at every step.

01

Read the site

We check sun, shade, soil and drainage bed by bed, and ask how much maintenance you want to do.

02

Choose the plants

A plan with plants that suit each spot and the look you want, sized correctly for the space at maturity, not just at the nursery.

03

Prepare and plant

We amend the beds, dig holes wide rather than deep, loosen the roots, and set each plant at the right depth before watering it in.

04

Mulch and establish

We apply mulch at the correct depth away from the stems, and you get a simple watering schedule for the first season.

What drives the price

Honest answer: we price planting in Medway, MA by the job rather than off a rate card. Why? Because no two properties are the same. Generally, anyone who quotes a firm price over the phone without seeing the site is guessing. That guess usually turns into a change order later. So here are a few of the things that move the price up or down:

Number, size and type of plants

Bed preparation and soil amendment needed

Removal of existing plants or lawn

Delivery and access for larger trees

When to schedule Planting in Medway, MA

Spring and fall are the best planting seasons in Massachusetts: cool air, warm soil and reliable rain. Container plants can go in through summer with attentive watering. Evergreens and screens do best planted by early fall so roots establish before winter.

Signs it’s time to call

  • Overgrown or dying foundation plantings
  • You want privacy from the road or a neighbor

Medway history and geography

History

Medway was first settled in 1657 and was officially incorporated in 1713. At that time, Medway began as a farming community of two hundred thirty-three. It was not long before the water power of the Charles River and Chicken Brook stimulated the formation of cotton and paper mills, straw and boot factories, and a variety of cottage industries. Medway demonstrates the central importance of the Charles River and the thriving town that grew alongside it. Today, the one-room schoolhouses are gone and the country stores have moved to the mall, but the open town meetings continue.
After nearby Medfield was established as a town in 1651, an increasing number of newcomers settled on the land west of the Charles River. By 1712, this settlement west of the Charles had grown large enough to petition the Massachusetts General Court for the creation of a separate new town. That petition was granted, and the town of Medway incorporated on October 25, 1713. At its founding by Henry Garnsey, and for 170 years afterward, the town of Medway included the land that is now Millis. Eventually, the eastern section of the town, known as East Medway, separated in 1885 to form the town of Millis, and Medway assumed the shape it has today.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.5 square miles (30 km²), of which 11.4 square miles (30 km²) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km²) (0.78%) is water. Medway is the geographical center between Boston, Worcester, and Providence, which is purported by some to explain the origin of the name. However, like many New England cities and towns, it most likely derived its name from an English location, in this case, the region of Medway, England, or the River Medway. Likely both its geographical location and a nod to old England compelled the choice of town name.

Transportation

Both Route 109 and Route 126 pass through the town and serve as some of the main roads in the town. Interstate 495 shortly passes through the southwest corner of the town, but does not provide any exits. The closest exits are in nearby Bellingham and Milford.
The closest MBTA Commuter Rail service is at Forge Park/495, Franklin, and Norfolk stations on the Franklin/Foxboro Line. Until 1966, the Millis Branch served stations at Medway and West Medway.
